  Larry Mahnken - Wiki Gonzalez
Larry Mahnken is a writer for The Hardball Times, publisher of the Replacement Level Yankees Weblog and a frequent poster at Baseball Think Factory, especially in the Game Chatters.
Larry's foreskin could have been used as the tarp at Busch Stadium on October 13, 1985, in which case he would to this day be known as the d*ckh**d who ran over Vince Coleman.
Larry left Baseball Think Factory in September, 2005 because certain posters were consistently infuriating him, and it was detrimental to his mental health to get so angry so often.

The Sports Retort: Yankees, Red Sox and the Wild Card   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Larry Mahnken and Ben Jacobs of the Hardball Times present an entertaining exchange on the Yankees and Red Sox, and whether injuries can keep them from making the playoffs.
Mahnken writes that the wild card isn't fair, even though it benefited the Yankees in 1996 and 2000, because it further decreases the chances of the team with the best regular season winning the World Series.
However, Mahnken may be on to something when he suspects that the poplarity of the wild card system has more to do with fans wanting to be entertained and less to do with their demand for fair competition.

Larry Mahnken isn't your typical Jack McDowell writer, he's a regular contributer to BTF and an analytical Yankee blog (the name of which I forget).
Either Mahnken is a regular reader ("lurker") here, or else he was alerted that his article was being discussed here, but he didn't just "bring" it here.
Also, Larry (or "Larry" as you call him) wasn't arguing that the Yanks are acting inappropriately or are bad for baseball or anything of the sort.

Larry Mahnken of the Replacement Level Yankees Weblog is posting DIPS statistics for the 2004 season.

Just remember, there's no claim that pitchers in general have no control over hits on balls in play, just established major league pitchers (i.e., the ones good enough to pitch lots of innings at a major league level).

Mahnken did a good bit of research on the issue; most importantly, he highlighted the fact that ESPN's Buster Olney didn't even define the stat correctly, something which everybody else (myself included) missed.
Commented Mahnken at the newly reconstituded Baseball Primer: "As for dividing by outs in opportunities, it's the only way the stat is similar to what Olney listed.
Mahnken concludes his article by trying to point out the fallacy of some offhand comments that Yankee announcers Jim Kaat and Paul O'Neill had been making about the current Yankee team.

Posted by: Larry Mahnken at October 19, 2004 03:48 PM It doesn't surprise me that Yankee fans can't distinguish between good baseball (such as running on a pitcher who can't hold runners) and dirty baseball (such as trying to induce an injury).

Larry did an excellent job of spelling out the difference between the two, so I'll quote his email:
In the Hardball Times article, Mahnken goes on to point out that while eventual champs Anaheim and Florida did well in POP in the postseasons in which they won, both ranked third among the eight playoff teams in their respective campaigns.
As club broadcasters Jim Kaat and Paul O'Neill noted last weekend, the team's offense is built much differently than in the championship years; in those seasons, the Yankees advanced runners, put runners in motion, bunted occasionally.
