I'm a huge Larry Merchant fan and think what he has added to HBO telecast over the years is truly going to be missed when he's gone.
Larry Merchant has been around forever and anyone who has punched that workman’s time clock for as long as he has deserves respect and can be allowed that certain crankiness to emerge at inopportune moments.

In a Larry Merchant cost-benefit analysis the benefit greatly outweighs the cost, and this weekend the potential benefit will reach yet again another one of those rare critical points where Larry can maximize his influence upon the sport he loves.
With two mismatches at hand I find it hard to believe that Larry Merchant is not seething with disgust this week in preparation and will let it hit the fan in his commentary both during the fight and in the post fight interview with the ambitiously shallow undisputed champion.

When Larry does the post fight interviews he is not afraid to ask the tough questions and never backs down.
Unlike Larry Merchant who asks tough questions, but always holds a level of respect towards the participants, Gray will try to bicker with and belittle boxers creating awkward moments and interviews that are painful to watch.
