		Micheaux and Locke both believed that their examples and those illustrated in their art should serve as inspiration for those in their race, particularly the masses.
		Micheaux has been roundly criticized for these two disparate themes but his critics often reveal an ahistorical, "presentist" view when making such remarks.
		Micheaux did not temper his criticism of American race relations for the rest of the silent era, a decision that placed him in a unique category of African American directors.

		Directed by novelist Oscar Micheaux, it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director.
		As a novelist, Micheaux recognizes the complexity of African American life, particularly in the Deep South, but he is reluctant to place the onus of blame for the impoverished condition of Blacks solely on the white population, and points to other Blacks who help to perpetuate their condition for reasons of personal gain.
		In addition to his scathing critique of Black society, Micheaux seemed to prefer lighter-skinned Blacks as his heroes and heroines, and may have modelled Sylvia after characters played by Lillian Gish.

		Oscar Micheaux's Within Our Gates is thought of as the earliest surviving feature film produced and directed by an African-American.
		The always outspoken Micheaux ("Body and Soul") said it was the answer to the country's racism and to the racism of Hollywood films like D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915).
		Because of poor timing and being released in a year of race riots, and also because of some controversial rape and lynching scenes many exhibitors refused to show it and the film became a box office flop.

		A versatile, all-around player who earned the nickname "Clyde the Glide," Drexler left the University of Houston after his junior year and was selected in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.
		While at the University of Houston, Drexler combined with Larry Micheaux and Akeem Abdul-Olajuwon to form the "Phi Slamma Jamma" front line that led the Cougars to their second-straight trip to the Final Four in the NCAA playoffs.
