Plagued by several severe childhood illnesses, Larry Parks was inspired by the example of his doctors to study medicine at the University of Illinois.
Parks was coached in the role by Al Jolson himself, whose singing voice was heard throughout the film (reportedly, this association was a pleasant one until Jolson, incensed that Columbia had not asked him to star in his own biopic, viciously turned on Parks and treated him atrociously).
In 1962, the ban was lifted on Larry Parks, and he made his movie comeback in John Huston's Freud; it proved to be his last film.

Born Samuel Lawrence Klausman Parks in Olathe, Kansas, his career was virtually ended when he admitted in 1951 to having been a member of a Communist party cell.
Having attended the University of Illinois, Parks played in stock companies for several years before signing a Hollywood contract in 1941.

According to Jolsen; apparently he was pleased with what Parks did except for one sequence on the runway Parks could not mimic the Jolsen dance convincely (for Jolie).
But, the film is completed,and on the opening night, Jolson (Larry Parks playing Jolson!) can't watch the film for he is nervous that this won't pull an audience.
As has been saidbefore Larry Parks does an unbelievably fine job but the voice of themature Jolson coming coming from the young Jolson in the early part of thefilm seems a bit odd.

Looking for other Fans of my Favorite Classic Actor who was Leading Man in both Jolson movies also "Down to Earth" "The Swordsman" and more, plus many B movies of which i am also a fan.
