  Marine Invertebrate Larval Biology
Therefore, larval response was dependent on the presence of at least one cis double bond in the molecule, conservation of molecular shape with increasing acyl chain length by addition of cis double bonds, and the presence of a free carboxyl group.
Larval settlement responses of Phragmatopoma lapidosa, a gregarious sabellariid from the tropical western Atlantic, were very similar to those of P. californica (Pawlik, 1988b).
Larval settlement experiments performed in laboratory flumes have several major advantages over those performed in still water; in particular, the ability of larvae to select substrata in flow can be assessed.

Coral Reef Fish Ecology Online Course
The larval ecology of reef fishes may be the key the elusive understanding of what is controlling the abundance and distribution of reef fish populations.
This high mortality of larval may have a major influence on adult population sizes of coral reef fishes (Doherty, 1983) as it may limit the supply of new recruits to a reef.
The ability of larval individuals to determine the local characteristics, including the availability of shelter, number of predators, and supply of food probably varies with species, as some are settling very immature while other are settling as fully developed juveniles.

The Post-Larval Must Be Very Cautious in Communicating with Larval Humans
Larvals are comfortably adapted to this limited four-channel communication, scan automatically for the survival meaning of each stimulus and scuttle by each other like ants, each intent on Hir own "reality" - reacting automaticallly to relevant cues from others.
Larval communication occurs in terms of four systems, some of which are comprehensible to the entire species, some of which are limited to members of the same cultural-imprint group.
Larvals submit themselves to learn new symbols only under special motivational circumstances where the new connections build on and confirm established systems or give promise of future emotional rewards of which the teacher is model.

LARVAL FORMS - Encyclopedia Britannica - LARVAL FORMS - JCSM's Study Center   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Though it is impossible to give here an account of the larval forms of the animal kingdom, we may illustrate these points, which are facts of fundamental importance in the study of larvae, by a reference to specific cases.
The conclusion, then, that we reach is that the larval phase of life graduates into the later phases, and that it is impossible to characterize it with precision, as we can the embryonic phase.
In animals with a well-marked larval phase, by far the greater number of the stages of structure are included in the larval period, for the developmental changes are more numerous and take place with greater rapidity at the beginning of life than in its later periods.

Larval Therapy: A Review of Clinical   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Larval therapy gained acceptance and was widely used until the discovery of antibiotics in the 1940's.
Larval therapy has also been used to successfully treat malignant breast ulcers, burns, abscesses, squamous cell carcinomas, and subacute mastoiditis.
Continuing this study, it was found that the larval secretions contained enzymes which have similar molecular weights, characteristics, inhibitions, and sensitivities as those of trypsin, leucine aminopeptidase, carboxypeptidase A, and carboxypeptidase B. There was also evidence of minute amounts of elastase activity.

Larval indices used were 1) frequency of occurrence; 2) mean abundance of all larvae captured unadjusted for age; and 3) mean abundance of age one-day larvae.
Larval abundance of Atlantic bluefin tuna, a species that poses a more intractable sampling problem than does king mackerel, namely an immense spawning area (the open Gulf) and lower overall abundance, has been used as a tuning variable in population assessments by VPA (Scott et al., 1993).
The correlation between this larval index and stock size became weaker with increasing age of larvae owing, it was surmised, to interannual variation in mortality and dispersal.

Regional larval fish archives now in operation
Studies of larval fishes are often the best way to provide many types of information of great value to fishery biologists and managers of fisheries.
Larval fish samples have been taken for many different types of research programs, and have been acquired, sorted and identified at great effort and expense.
People working on larval fish field studies now and in the future should make arrangements for their collections to be deposited in the RLFA nearest to them upon completion of the work.

 Guidelines for larval surveillance
Even now, some individuals feel that larval surveys are really only necessary in the early part of the breeding season; once it has been established what particular species are present in each specific site, it can be taken for granted that the species composition will remain the same throughout the rest of the season.
The basic tools required for larval surveillance are: a standard, white 400 ml-capacity dipper; a small pipette or eyedropper; a pair of boots, vials, 6 oz plastic bags or some other form of container for collecting larvae; labels for the collections; and a pencil.
Larval surveillance involves the determination of the presence or absence of immature mosquitoes within a given site, and their density, but it does not stop there.

Larval control strategies against the vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa could be highly effective, complementary to adult control interventions, and should be prioritized for further development, evaluation and implementation as an integral part of Rolling Back Malaria.
Larval stages of mosquitoes are of relatively low mobility compared with flying adults and it is the humans that must bring the control to them rather than vice versa.
Larval control does not suffer from such drawbacks and should be integrated with more commonly used approaches such as improved access to screening and treatment, bednets or indoor-spraying [4,25,45,46].

ipedia.com: Neoteny Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Neoteny is a term in developmental biology that describes the retention of juvenile characteristics in the adults of a species or the attainment of sexual maturity by an organism still in its larval stage, as is found among certain amphibians and insects.
Neoteny is sometimes induced by environmental conditions that inhibit the completion of metamorphosis, such as low temperature or lack of available iodine leading to low thyroid gland activity.
In insects, reproduction in the larval stages is known as paedogenesis; it occurs in the females of certain beetles, Strepsiptera, bagworms, and gall midges.

Even at their largest, the larval fish the MU researchers collect are no larger than a penny.
“For fish such as shiners, shad, carp, paddlefish and sturgeon, the larval stage is a bottleneck in their life cycle,” said Reeves, a doctoral candidate in fisheries and wildlife who recently completed the second of three field seasons collecting larval fish.
Correlating these factors with the presence or absence, relative abundance and species richness of larval fish will help determine the criteria of optimal nursery habitat from that which currently is available, Reeves said.
