Laryngeal mask airway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is used in anaesthesia and in emergency medicine for airway management.
These may lead to LMA malpositioning and inability to achieve an airway and ventilation.2 In the 2000 guidelines, the LMA is depicted with a semi-inflated cuff, held by the shaft with the left hand and introduced straight into the mouth.
The LMA is passed behind the upper incisors, with the shaft parallel to the patient’s chest and the index finger pointing toward the intubator.

By contrast, laryngeal mask airways have a tubular shaft opening into the centre of a generally elliptical mask or cuff, which is inflated to seal in the region of the hypopharnyx, at the top of the trachea.
An airway according to Claim 7, characterised in that the height (H) of the recess (54) is between 2.96 and 3.27 the internal diameter of the tubular portion (1).
An airway according to Claim 9, characterised in that the ratio of the internal diameter of the tubular portion (1) cubed to the internal volume of the recess is between 50 and 60.

LMAs consist of a transparent airway tube (usually made of silicone) with a standard 15mm connector at one end and an inflatable cuff at the other.
Reinforced LMAs are used in cases when the surgeon and anaesthetist share airway access (such as ENT and dental procedures) as the LMA can be bent away from the surgical field without the tube kinking.
To insert the LMA, the cuff is deflated using a syringe and the LMA introduced into the mouth until it sits at the back of the hypopharynx.
