All 260 people on board were killed [2 flight crew members, 7 flight attendants, and 251 passengers (including 5 unticketed infants sitting on their parents' laps)], along with five people on the ground, making it the second deadliest crash on American soil (behind American Airlines Flight 191).
The flight route designation of flights between Kennedy Airport and Las Americas Airport now are under Flight 619, Flight 635, and Flight 789.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (IATA: SJU, ICAO: TJSJ) (located in Carolina, Puerto Rico) is the island's main international gateway, and its main connection to the mainland United States.
Located in the area known as Isla Verde, the airport was, for many decades, known as Isla Verde International Airport, until 1985, when then Governor Rafael Hernández Colón decided to name it after Luis Muñoz Marín, Puerto Rico's first democratically elected governor.
Various celebrities have been welcomed to Puerto Rico at this airport, including Menudo in 1981, after the group came back from touring Mexico; the boxer Félix Trinidad in 1999, after he defeated Oscar De La Hoya, and Pope John Paul II in 1984.

It is in a remote part of the country, about 3 1/2 hrs drive time east of the Santo Domingo Las Americas International Airport, along one of the most beautiful white silk-fine sand palm-studded beaches in the country, if not the entire Caribbean and world.
Another option is to fly into La Romana airport, which is about 1 1/2 hours west of Punta Cana and there are regularly scheduled flights on American Airlines from Miami (jet service) and flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico on American Eagle.
The road from La Romana to Punta Cana is a two-lane highway, severely pot-holed in spots with not much scenery and many slow moving trucks and buses which were difficult to pass at times for 10-minutes stretches.

The airport didn't change much until the late 80's when President Balaguer ordered the refurbishment of the passenger terminal and a new satellite concourse was opened with gateways and many other new technologies were put in place in Las Americas.
Now as a new group of investors are running and administrating airports in the Dominican Republic some changes have taken place, and the refurbishing of the airport is currently being worked on.

Unless they moved Las Americas Airport to POP, Sosua is one heck of a distance.
Las Americas is in the other side of the Island.
Your best bet from Las Americas is to get a place in Boca Chica or Santo Domingo both approx 10 to 15 min from the airport.
