LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX promoter Tommy Baker formally presented his plans to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority last week and met with strong opposition to the idea from the Hilton Hotels Corporation.
Circus Circus, Mirage and Primadonna are all keen on the race while MGM Grand - which runs the world largest hotel - 5009 rooms - at the southern end of the block to the east of The Strip is not opposed to the idea.
Las Vegas newspapers reported that there are other options for the United States Grand Prix in Dallas and Orlando.

The United States Grand Prix concluded the Formula One season in 1981, but instead of being at the natural road course in Watkins Glen, New York, as it had for the previous twenty years, the final race in 1981 took place in a parking lot in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Williams drivers, Alan Jones and Reutemann, were fastest from the start, of the first practice with points leader Reutemann, particularly determined and quick, the faster of the two.

LAS VEGAS -- City officials approved a five-year deal to host a Champ Car World Series race on streets around some of the city's oldest casinos.
The City Council unanimously approved a commitment Wednesday to stage the Las Vegas Grand Prix, with the inaugural race set for April 8, 2007.
It will mark the first time a major auto race takes place on Las Vegas city streets and the first time in 23 years one was held close to the Las Vegas Strip.

Finishing second in the Grand Prix, worth $12,100, was Thomas Velin, of Denmark, riding Equest Carnute, a 10-year-old Selle Francais stallion out of Oberon du Moulin AA and Dynamique.
