Laser (dinghy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Laser became a men's Olympic-class boat in 1996, and a special Olympic edition of the boat was released that year in commemoration.
The Laser is 4.23 metres long (13 ft 10.5 in) long, with a waterline length of 3.81 m (12.5 ft).
The Laser has 3 control lines (excluding the main sheet) from which the helmsman can adjust the rig, these are the outhaul, the boom vang and the cunningham (forward leech tensioner).

Dinghy sailing is the activity of sailing small boats by using (1) the sails and (2) underwater foils (centreboard and rudder).
The Mirror Dinghy was predominantly built using stitch and glue, while the Heron is an example of a boat built using plywood on a timber frame.
The Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 are the variants of the Laser dinghy, a single-hander whose combination of simplicity, portability and performance has done much to advance dinghy racing and training.

laser printer - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about laser printer
Computer printer in which the image to be printed is formed by the action of a laser on a light-sensitive drum, then transferred to paper by means of an electrostatic charge.
Laser printers range in size from small fl-and-white machines designed to work with microcomputers to very large colour machines designed for high-volume commercial printing.
Because they produce very high-quality print and are virtually silent, small laser printers (along with ink-jet printers) have replaced dot-matrix and daisywheel printers as the most popular type of microcomputer printer.

 Introduction
The weight in a smaller dinghy (centre board or dagger board boat) is provided solely by the crew, who must counter balance the force of the wind, to keep the boat upright.
The rudder is mounted on the transom of the dinghy, by means of a pair of pintles and gudgeons that allow the rudder to pivot (about an axis parallel to the mast) with respect to the hull.
The laser has only one sail, the mainsail that is rigged on a two-part alloy mast. The upper mast section slots into the hollow end of the lower section, which in turn is seated in the mast step; a well in the deck of the hull.

 The Laser Dinghy
The Laser mainsheet controls the angle of the boom until it is pulled over the corner of the boat, at which time it begins to also control mast bend.
As a result, as the Laser mainsheet is pulled tighter, bending the mast and flattening the sail, it reduces leech/batten hook or "return" and opens the leach.
Broad reaching in a Laser isn’t very effective, but sailing by the lee definitely is. The goal is to reverse the flow on the sail from the normal direction to a leech to luff direction.

Sailing a Laser dinghy is probably the most competitive form of one-on-one sailing that any dinghy sailor can aspire to.
The class rules of this one-design dinghy have been designed to ensure that all competitors are matched evenly against one another with the same equipment, and that it is the skill of the sailor that wins through.
And in the Laser dinghy - which is of glass fibre construction - about the only scope you have for this is with the tiller and tiller extension.

The Byte was designed by Ian Bruce, the father of the LaserĀ®, who put his 18 years of experience with the Laser dinghy into the design and development of the Byte.
Unlike the Laser, Bytes have a center-lead mainsheet traveler (no mainsheet getting caught on a corner of the stern), the sail zips around the mast, and all controls for vang, cunningham, and outhaul are led to both side decks with adequate purchase.
Lasers, with their greater sail area, are faster downwind and move through chop better than a Byte.

Lightning Smashes into Laser Dinghy, Sailor in Hospital
Gosford sailor Chris Meech is recovering in Gosford Hospital after his Laser dinghy was literally blown apart by a bolt of lightning while he was sailing on Brisbane Waters on Saturday.
Meech, a Laser Masters sailor, was heading back to Gosford Sailing Club after race officials had abandoned racing for the day because of the severity of storms in the area when a bolt hit the mast of his 4.23 metre Laser, blowing a hole in the deck which then delaminated from the hull.
"The Laser sailors were sailing back to the club through the moored yachts, on the assumption that lightning would hit the taller mast of one of these boats rather than a small dinghy mast," English added.
