The first role envisioned for the laser in military applications was as a "death ray": a hand-held device that might replace the gun as a weapon for infantry, or a vehicle-mounted "laser cannon" able to destroy tanks, ships and aircraft.
Laser beams are focused through large telescopes on Earth aimed toward the arrays, and the time taken for the beam to be reflected back to Earth measured to determine the distance between the Earth and Moon with high precision.
This is a low-power laser pointer used to indicate a target for a precision-guided munition, typically launched from an aircraft.

The main advantage of the laser speed gun is the small beam diameter (one of the unique laser properties) that allows targeting a specific vehicle even at long distances ([13] refers a beam diameter of around 1 meter at a distance of 300 meters from the source).
Unlike the Doppler effect-based RADAR speed guns, the laser speed meter determines the distance to a moving object by comparing the change in distance of several samples over a short period of time (say, several hundred samples over the course of a third of a second [13]).
Elementary physics is again used, this time by the application of the Doppler Effect, that states that the frequency drift of the reflected radiation in relation to the original frequency, allows the calculation of the speed and direction at which a target is moving in relation to the measuring equipment.
