Laserfilm was a videodisc format developed by McDonnell-Douglas in 1984 that was a transmissive laser-based playback medium (unlike its competitor, laserdisc, which was a reflective system).
It worked by having the laser to shine through one side of the disc to a receiving sensor on the other side, where the beam of the laser would be interrupted by a spiral of small dots on the disc.
The Laserfilm format was originally based off an earlier videodisc format called ARDEV, developed by a company of the same name which was originally a subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield until 1981.

The installation is based on the idea of applying a new technological advance from the field of optics [diffractive elements] to film as a medium.
The simple optical construction of Laserfilm, on the other hand, involving nothing more than a data carrier and a laser as its light source, makes it possible to directly project a film without needing to resort to further technical.
The film is mounted on a glass disc held in the centre of a freely swinging pendulum suspended from the ceiling.

One of the many grandfathers of the DVD format was Laserfilm (not to be confused with Laserdisc).
Laserfilm never made it as a consumer video format, but was used internally by McDonnell Douglas who branded it.

Data was recorded on the disc as a spiral track of dots, which interrupted the laser beam as it was projected through the disc.
Thus Laserfilm is a transmissive system rather than reflective, which is characteristic of the popular LaserDisc format.
