Dietrich Gotzek: Molecular phylogeny of the Lasiocampidae and implications on the evolution of foraging behavior (2000)
The aim of this study was to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships at the subfamily level within the Holarctic moth family Lasiocampidae using molecular sequence data.
Maximum likelihood: The maximum likelihood approaches both supported the monophyly of the Lasiocampidae and were nearly congruent, except for the removed placement of one genus (Odonestis) and for supporting one additional lower-level node in the restricted matrix.

The Lasiocampidae are reasonably diverse in the Old World tropics, less so in the new.
Hindwing venation of Lasiocampidae: left, most frequent South-east Asian configuration (paralebeda); top right, gastropachine configuration (Gastropacha leopoldi), with numerous humeral veins anterior to Sc, and a major additional cell between Sc and Rs; bottom right, Syrastrena, with rather basal humeral veins, otherwise similar to Paralebeda.
The quadrifasciate Lasiocampinae with a strong cubile are treated first, followed by the bifasciate genera where the cubile is weak or absent.

 tent caterpillar - HighBeam Encyclopedia
tent caterpillar common name for the larvae of the members of a family of moths (Lasiocampidae), easily recognized by the large silk tents, or webs, that the larvae construct during the spring in the crotches of trees, particularly apple and cherry trees.
Removing egg masses during the winter or removing tents in the early spring and soaking them in kerosene or burning them, are the most effective means of control.
Tent caterpillars are classified in the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Lepidoptera, superfamily Bombycoidea, family Lasiocampidae.

Phylogenetic relationships in Lasiocampidae (Lepidoptera): initial evidence from elongation factor-1 alpha sequences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
As a start toward such a phylogeny, we sequenced the protein-encoding, nuclear gene elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1 alpha) from 13 lasiocampids representing all the subfamilies and tribes present in North America, plus three outgroups.
Phylogenetic signal, mainly from synonymous change, was strong, with seven of 11 potential groups in Lasiocampidae showing >90% bootstrap support under parsimony and likelihood analyses.
Larval sociality is found in three of the 'large Lasiocampini' genera, each of which may represent an origin separate from the others and from Malacosoma.

 diploma thesis
In the present work the larval communication behaviour of Eriogaster lanestris, a social species of the family Lasiocampidae, was investigated by experimentally testing its trail following behaviour and activity patterns.
Monitoring the activity of caterpillars was realized by electronic data acquisition using a computer over a period of several weeks.
The possibility of temperature regulation in groups, optimized use of resources, and the oviposition patterns of the females seem to be of greater importance for the evolution of sociality in the Lasiocampidae than solitary trail following as ancestor for social communication systems.

New World species in this family tend to be quite uniform in overall wing shape, with characteristic broad, rounded wings and hairy bodies.
