AntCam - Lasius Flavus - David's Online Ant Farm Journal
There are occasional reports of queenless colonies rearing workers form worker-laid eggs, and Lasius is one of the genera in which this is supposed to occur.
The queens of all Lasius species are easy to distinguish from workers by size, except for a couple of species which have small queens, but these can be recognized by their different proportions pretty easily.
Lasius Niger is a versatile ant that nests in rotting stumps, beneath stones, or in the open soil (often in mounds), and forages both below and above ground and up onto low vegetation.

(L.flavus Fabricius,1781).
Lasius platythorax.

I will attempt to keep journals on my observations on these ants, though this will be nigh on impossible with the Lasius flavus ants as they are underground foragers and notoriously difficult to observe in the wild.
At first I was very disappointed but now I have come to realise that I still have this colony as they are now living in my garden where I can continue to chart their progress as they leave home venture into the big wide world.

Polygyny in the nest (the presence of more than one functional queen), and enormous numbers of workers going up and down of trees is also a characteristic of the species.
