Lasso of Truth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lasso of Truth is a fictional weapon wielded by DC Comics superheroine Wonder Woman, Princess Diana of Themyscira.
In the Perez re-invention, the Lasso was forged by the god, Hephaestus from the Golden Girdle of Gaea that was once worn by Antiope, sister of Queen Hippolyta.
This allegorical interpretation is often ignored in later stories and by much of fandom, as the lasso was long established as magically unable to break, and was never before stated to be the ultimate representation of truth.

A lasso, also known as a lariat, is a loop of rope that is designed to be thrown around a target and tighten when pulled.
With the lasso around the horn, the cowboy can use his horse as the equivalent of a towtruck with a winch.
Lassos were also used by Tatars and the fictional character Indiana Jones.

The Lasso was forged by the god, Hephaestus from the Golden Girdle of Gaea that was once worn by Antiope, sister of Queen Hippolyta.
Post-Crisis the power of truth was written as innate to Wonder Woman herself, and the Lasso is merely a focus of that power.
This writing is often ignored in later stories as the lasso was long before established as magically unable to break, and was never before stated to be the ultimate representation of truth.

 Wonder Woman: Goddess of Truth
Carrying a lasso fashioned from one of the girdles of Gaea and a star-spangled costume she arrived in the modern world and was quickly christened Wonder Woman by the media.
With the help of Steve Trevor (Diana Trevor's son) and others, Diana confronted Ares and ensnared him with the Lasso of Truth (forged from the Girdle of Gaea) which forced him to realise that if he destroyed mankind then there would be nobody to worship him and his own power would dwindle.
She was normally armed with the Golden Lasso of Truth, which forced anybody snared by it to tell the truth it could also life mind control effects from people.

The truth is that the lasso really doesn't have to be as large of a problem as the writers are making it.
It was the 1986 revamp that reduced the lasso's usefulness to merely truth.
I think the lack of powers of her lasso just shows that they've decided to take the most simplistic and, in the end, boring aspects of her character and fly with them.

There is a basic story of a sort of demigod from Paradise Island, who has these bracelets that can deflect bullets, a lasso of truth, and all this stuff, some of which sounds very cool and some that sounds a little old fashioned.
Truth lasso, bullet deflecting bracelets and I'm sure she'll be wearing those silly knee-high boots too.
There is a lot more to Wonder Woman than a lasso and some bracelets so its wrong to think he can ditch everything else so long as he keeps those two things.

Observer | I want bullet-proof wristbands, and a lasso of truth
The concept sounds a lot more empowered than it is, which is another thing that worries me about the fashion range.
Wonderwoman was a bit of a Diana Spencer figure: while Batman and Superman had dark souls, driven by the cruel deaths of their parents, she was just a bored fairy princess with good accessories.
I would use the lasso when negotiating radio work with the BBC ('So, tell me again why £17.50 is the most you can pay for the day...') but I hope I would have the sense not to throw it round boys.

The truth issue is bigger than the lasso issue.
Ask a person with the lasso around them, and you will only get the truth - as limited by their human experience and perception.
Whether the lasso can access the subconscious - or only the conscious - part of the brain remains to be seen.

So, when he's told to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, he proceeds to do exactly that.

I think this is supported by the time the lasso broke under the influence of two equally valid truths that depended on the POV of the person.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Orlando de Lassus
While with many of his contemporaries, even the most noted, such as Dufay, Okeghem, Obrecht, and Josquin des Prés, contrapuntal skill is often an end in itself, Lassus, being consummate master of every form of the art and possessing a powerful imagination, always aims at a lofty and truthful interpretation of the text before him.
Among his more famous works must be mentioned his setting of the seven penitential psalms, which for variety, depth, truth of expression, and elevation of conception are unsurpassed.
Duke Albert showed his admiration for this work by having it written on parchment and bound in two folio volumes, which the noted painter Hans Mielich illustrated, at the command of the duke, in a most beautiful manner.

As far as I know, she ALWAYS carries the lasso of truth these days, so she technically has a portable polygraph on her at all times.
Pre-CRISIS, the lasso didn't necessarily force those bound by it to tell the truth (although it certainly could); it merely forced those in it to do the wielder's will.
A polygraph played a role in the lead story in WONDER WOMAN #217 (WW fights the Duke of Deception, with Green Arrow monitoring her for the JLA) but it was used on Green Arrow rather than Diana.

Lightening Lasso: A lasso given to Cassie as a gift from Ares (if her father is Zeus, would that make him her Uncle?) It hones Zeus’s lighting when Cassie is in a distressed state (basically if she gets pissed, she fries the baddies)
Unlike Wonderwoman’s lasso of truth, which works only for Wonderwoman (I’m guessing that’s how it works), Cassie’s lasso can be used by anyone.
I have found in comics that Cassie’s lasso doesn’t seem to do serious damage, but then again damage sorta varies from comic arc to comic arc (when Supergirl used it the lasso seemed much more powerful, but she is full of teen angst) So I wouldn’t rely on it too much.
