Last Alliance of Elves and Men - The Lord of the Rings Wiki - A Wikia wiki
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was formed in 3430 of the Second Age (S.A.) in response to the threat of conquest by the Dark Lord Sauron.
The host that comprised this Last Alliance of Elves and Men is said to have been the greatest seen in Middle-earth since the beginning of the First Age: ten times ten thousand strong.
But the hearts of Elves and Men did not falter, for the Elves were in the springtime of their glory, and the Numenoreans were at the noontide of their power, and they knew that they had the upper hand.

 Elves - Tolkien Gateway
The Elves awoke in the northeast of Middle-earth during the Years of the Trees in the First Age on the shores of Lake Cuiviénen under the starlit sky, as Middle-earth lay in darkness at that time.
Those Elves that remained in Middle-earth were doomed to a slow decline until, in the words of Galadriel, they faded and became a "rustic folk of dell and cave," and were greatly diminished from their ancient power and nobility.
Elves have few children, as a rule; (Fëanor and Nerdanel were an exception, since they had seven sons), and there are relatively sizable intervals between each child.

Last Alliance of Elves and Men - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men is an episode in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth.
According to notes made by Tolkien after the publication of Lord of the Rings and found in Unfinished Tales, Oropher, the Sindarin king of the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood, or Greenwood the Great as it was then known, raised a large force as part of the Last Alliance to overthrow Sauron.
Rule of the Silvan Elves and field command of their remaining strength (barely a third) passed to Oropher's son Thranduil the father of Legolas.

Last Alliance of Elves and Men - Tolkien Gateway
Fearing the establishment of the powerful kingdoms in exile — Arnor and Gondor — by his hated enemies, the Dúnedain, Sauron launched a preemptive attack on Gondor in S.A. In response, Elendil, High King of the Dúnedain, formed an alliance with Gil-galad, the High King of the Eldar, to repel Sauron's assault.
The siege lasted for seven years, during which Anárion, Elendil's son, was slain.
With the victory over Sauron, and the death of Gil-galad and Elendil, the Last Alliance was dissolved.

The Last Alliance of Elves and Men
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was formed by Gil-galad, the Elven King and by Elendil, the King of Gondor, the last leader of the Númenóreans in Middle Earth.
The host of Gil-galad and Elendil had the victory, for the might of the elves was still great in those days, and the Númenóreans were strong and tall, and terrible in their wrath.
But at the last the siege was so strait that Sauron himself came forth; and he wrestled with Gil-galad and Elendil, and they both were slain, and the sword of Elendil broke under him as he fell.

Sauron probably met the Alliance forces somewhere near the Undeeps, but seeing that he was outnumbered he fell back, destroying the ancient Entish domain north of the Emyn Muil (later known as "The Brown Lands") in an attempt to slow the advance of the Alliance43.
The Silvan Elves may have been enraged by the slaughter that occurred in the marshes, and perhaps Oropher thought Sauron's forces were weaker than they were.
Isildur's folly was the Alliance's triumph, for the Eldar were thus able to use their three remaining Rings of Power for more than 3000 years to enhance their world.

The forest of Mirkwood is ancient beyond the reckoning of Elves and Men - it is said that the first-born Elves came through the eaves of this great woodland when they first travelled west to the call of the Valar, and some lingered under the eaves of the great wood.
When men awoke not all heeded the call west, and some of the original strains of humanity may be unchanged in the blood of the woodmen of Mirkwood.
It is presumed that they came east with a host of fellow Sindar Elves, though the majority of his kingdom is made up of Silvan Elves or Nandor – those born under the eaves of the forest, without sight of the Sea.
