 EDITOR'S CHOICE: The Last Judgment
The Last Judgment was defined as God's judgment of the characters of all humans (and other free and intelligent beings such as angels), a judgment based on God's eternal and certain knowledge, and therefore immutable.
The judgment would be a judgment of all the peoples of the world, but the Jewish apocalyptic writers were naturally most concerned with the judgment of Israel itself, where the criterion was clear: loyalty or disloyalty to the Covenant.
Judgment, Athenagoras continued, is thus judgment of the whole person, both body and soul; furthermore, since the passions of the body can urge us to sin, it would be unjust or absurd to judge the soul without the body; the opposite is true also: the body, which has labored and suffered, deserves its reward.

Judgment at history's end is the climax of a process by which God holds nations and persons accountable to him as Creator and Lord.
As the first step in the final judgment the evil leaders whose blasphemous activities sparked the tribulation are captured in battle by the triumphant Christ and consigned to the lake of fire (19:20-21).
Belief in the last judgment was uniformly endorsed in the early creeds and the Reformation confessions.

Realms of Faith: The Last Judgment
Crucial to understanding the biblical passages of the last judgment is the concept of the throne of God.
Paul's last letter speaks of Christ as the judge of "the living and the dead" (4:1) and follows James' lead in speaking of his reward as a crown: the crown of righteousness, which will be given "on that day" to all those who have "loved His appearing" (4:8).
This judgment is frequently spoken of in plague and battle imagery.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: General Judgment (Last Judgment)
They were meant to foreshadow the last judgment and to keep the end of the world present to the minds of Christians, without, however, exciting useless curiosity and vain fears.
That this judgment is ascribed to Christ, not only as God, but also as Man, is expressly declared in Scripture; for although the power of judging is common to all the Persons of the Trinity, yet it is specially attributed to the Son, because to Him also in a special manner is ascribed wisdom.
The procedure of the judgment is described in Matthew 25:31-46, and in the Apocalypse 20:12.

It is claimed that judgment is important as the basis of philosophical inquiry, in its difference to the propositional approach.
Judgment, to start with, includes phenomenology in an intrinsic manner, and particularly phenomenology is the most troubling problem for treatments of functionalism.

The Roman Catholic Church believes this last judgement is not a literal trial, as those who have already died are either in Hell, Heaven, or awaiting Heaven in Purgatory, as a result of their particular judgment on their death.
The last judgement instead will occur after the resurrection of the dead and the reuniting of the body and soul, in which the sins and judgement for each person will be made present to all before their status in eternal life is resumed.
He discusses the last judgment and the establishment of the New Church in particular in The Last Judgment, Continuation concerning the Last Judgment, and Apocalypse Revealed.

The Last Judgment: Where and how it was effected
The manner in which the Judgment is effected is fully described in the disclosures which Swedenborg has made concerning the spiritual world and the life of a person after their resurrection.
By the Last Judgment a most important change was effected in our spiritual relations, and in the aspect of the human mind to the reception of those Divine forces which constitute its life.
Those who accept the disclosures of Swedenborg concerning the other life find his account of the Judgment to be eminently credible in itself, fully in accordance with all known laws of human nature, consistent with the Divine character and the purposes of infinite love and the methods of infinite wisdom.

He was at once commissioned to paint his next great work, the Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, which affords the strongest possible contrast with his own Ceiling.
In his last years he made a number of drawings of the Crucifixion, wrote much of his finest poetry, and carved the Pietà (now in Florence Cathedral Museum) which was originally intended for his own tomb, as well as the nearly abstract Rondanini Pietà (Milan, Castello).
This last work, in which the very forms of the Dead Christ actually merge with those of His Mother, is charged with an emotional intensity which contemporaries recognized as Michelangelo's 'terribilità'.

THE CHURCH IN THE LAST JUDGMENT
All the judgments which Christ Jesus unleashes in the world in the form of war and revolution, of famine and pestilence, of postponement of wrath aroused by the blood of the church, of world-collapse and especially of the seven final plagues have but one aim.
It is namely so, that just before the last plagues of the seven trumpets break out - hence after the opening of the sixth seal with its judgments and before the unleashing of the final judgment (the seventh seal) - John announces that the church of God has been made secure.
Before describing the last drama from the church's viewpoint, he says again "And I saw, and behold the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.

"The Last Judgment and Second Coming, Part 1," a sermon by Rev. James P. Cooper
In Scripture, the "Last Judgment" is sometimes also called the "end of the age." Some have translated this as the "end of the world," which carries a more dramatic meaning than was intended.
As will be shortly shown from scripture passages, the Last Judgment is not the end of the world, but the end of one state of the spiritual church, and the beginning of a new era, or state.
Just as the final judgment on the Jewish Church was prophesied in the Old Testament, so what we usually call the Last Judgment on the Christian Church was also prophesied in the New Testament, especially in the 24th Chapter of Matthew and in the whole of the book of Revelation.

The mighty composition, painted by Michelangelo between 1536 and 1541, is centred around the dominant figure of Christ, captured in the moment preceding that when the verdict of the Last Judgement is uttered (Matthew 25:31-46).
As well as praise, the Last Judgement also caused violent reactions among the contemporaries.
For example the Master of Ceremonies Biagio da Cesena said that "it was most dishonest in such an honoured place to have painted so many nude figures who so dishonestly show their shame and that it was not a work for a Chapel of the Pope but for stoves and taverns" (G. Vasari, Le Vite).

During this time, the last Saints resuscitated will become priests of Christ (Rev 20:6) and will accomplish their services for humans in flesh and in bone having survived to the cataclysm of the fourth cycle.

During the same judgment phase, all man who has ever lived will resuscitate to be judged according to their works, which means for some persons the eternal punishment and for others the eternal revival (Rev 20:11-15).
