It first appeared in The Independent, but can also be found in collections of his short fiction, notably the Penguin edition of The Last Word and Other Stories, for which it is the lead story.
The story revolves around the last pope, John XXIX, who was overthrown more than twenty years earlier with the establishment of a new world government under General Megrim.
His last words, before he is shot, are Corpus domini nostri...

Concrete is a great pavement and it lasts almost forever, but when it has to be replaced, the process can be long and involved and crippling for retail businesses fronting on the street under construction.
Last month, 22 Congressmen saw fit to co-sponsor a bill that would suspend the 18.4-cent-per-gallon federal fuel tax for a month to reduce the impact of high-priced gasoline on consumers.
More troubling, by far, is the prospect that this was the last best chance America had to increase its federal program to levels that would allow both the restoration and the expansion of her major interstates and highways.

On The Last Word two teams composed of a celebrity guest and a studio contestant attempted to guess sets of words that had something in common from randomly selected letters.
After a letter was revealed, a player could attempt to guess the word, or pass control to his or her opponent.
Correctly guessing a word earned the player a prize, but only the team that identified the last word was entitled (similar to High Rollers) to keep their prizes.

Shut up the words, and seal the book for this is all I will show to you now." He means, "We have come to the end, your work is finished; this is all that will be revealed to you now." So this has nothing to do with the understanding of the book of Daniel.
From the time when the last desecration of the temple takes place, in the middle of the seven year period which constitutes the seventieth week of Daniel, from that time, says the man in linen, there shall be twelve hundred and ninety days.
May the words of this book, the greatness of its contents, the revelation of its life to come, strengthen us and help us as it was intended to do, that we might understand the days in which we live.

Such an account of reason cannot possibly be the last word.
If there really is a "last word" about the truth of things, a "logos" that binds the cosmos together in a system that is both knowable and mysterious, then Nagel’s understanding of reason as an "aspiration to universality" is a kind of natural piety.
Perhaps no more than that is possible unless and until that last word becomes personal, becomes for us the last (or, also, first) speaker who addresses us—as Barth put it, "the final word of the original chairman."

MILES BEYOND Introduction to The Last Word liner notes
During 2001-2 Warner Brothers was busy with the creation of a boxed set that was to include everything Miles Davis had recorded in the studio during his time with the company, 1985-1991, including many previously unreleased studio outtakes, plus some particularly noteworthy live material from the same era.
The box was to be called The Last Word, and to be released on Rhino Records in September 2001, to commemmorate the 10th anniversary of Miles's death.
In addition, because of the personal and legal issues Miles's family and some of the Estate's legal representatives had with Jo Gelbard, Miles's last romantic partner (1986-1991), there was fury that I'd interviewed her.

Parents frequently complain that their kids have to have “the last word.” We all know what this sounds like, and it can be remarkably frustrating to try to get kids out of this pattern, but here’s how:
You have to get clear that you are willing to allow them to have the last word (for now!) and then determine what to do in order to teach them that it is not the wisest choice.
Once you break this desire (on your part) for the last word, you now have a choice to walk away from most of the small stuff.

The Lais' tenure has lasted only 13 years, but for them, as for former generations of owners the laundry business was an entry into American life, a precious opening, but one also that required long hot hours of hard work.
The laundry has allowed the Lais' to build a small platform of economic security and stability, enough to raise two sons who have learned language and lessons enough to look beyond the laundry as a livelihood.
It appears that 121 North Main was an address blessed by the laundry god, at least until this last year when the real estate spirit assumed a more dominant presence.

During the last five years of her life, Princess Diana had one friend and confidante who was special to her.
DIANA—THE LAST WORD is the fascinating story of how she reached that point.
Sadly, in a 100 years our "People's Princess" might be a blip on the radar screen and most of the historical information about her may come from the inner circle, since the Royal Family, as of right now, does not look in a hurry to write a tell-all book about "their" Diana.
