	Janos Hunyadi - LoveToKnow 1911
		On the sudden death of Albert in 1439, Hunyadi, feeling acutely that the situation demanded a warriorking on the throne of St Stephen, lent the whole weight of his influence to the candidature of the young Polish king Wladislaus III.
		In 1450 Hunyadi went to Pressburg to negotiate with Frederick the terms of the surrender of Ladislaus V., but no agreement could be come to, whereupon the Cilleis and Hunyadi's other enemies accused him of aiming at the throne.
		On the 14th of July 1456 Hunyadi with his flotilla destroyed the Turkish fleet; on the 21st Szilagyi beat off a fierce assault, and the same day Hunyadi, taking advantage of the confusion of the Turks, pursued them into their camp, which he captured after a desperate encounter.

		John (János) Hunyadi was the legendary Hungarian general who defeated in the summer of 1456 the mighty Turkish army of Mehmet II at Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade) and stopped the Turkish advance into Western Europe.
		John Hunyadi's name is not widely known in the West, but his memory of defeating the Turks has been honored since 1456.
		Even Sultan Mehmet II paid him tribute:"Although he was my enemy I feel grief over his death, because the world has never seen such a man." Although the Turks would not attack Hungary for another 70 years, political strife continued to trouble the kingdom.

	Ladislas V
		On the death of Wladislaus III (November 10th, 1444), Ladislas V was elected king by the Hungarian estates, though not without considerable opposition, and a deputation was sent to Vienna to induce the emperor to surrender the child and the holy crown; but it was not until 1452 that Frederick was compelled to relinquish both.
		The child was then transferred to the pernicious guardianship of his maternal grandfather Ulrich Cillei, who corrupted him soul and body and inspired him with a jealous hatred of the Hunyadis.
		He remained supinely indifferent to the Turkish peril; at the instigation of Cillei did his best to hinder the defensive preparations of the great Hunyadi, and fled from the country on the tidings of the siege of Belgrade.
