It is an area drained primarily by the Palouse River system and includes th e western sections of Latah County, the southwest corner of Benewah County, Idaho; and the central part of eastern Washington state.
The headwaters of the Palouse River begin in the northeast corner of Latah County in the Hoodoo Mountains at an altitude of 5,000’.
The northeastern portion of the county is part of the St. Maries River drainage and flows into the Coeur d’Alene Lake and the Spokane River.

 Latah County Situational Statement: Historical Facts
Latah’s first recorded inhabitants were the Nez Perce Indians who arrived in the area about 1200 A.D. The Greater Nez Perce Trail crossed the county from north to south.
The Nez Perce migrated to Latah County in the spring and summer to dig camas and biscuit root, to pick huckleberries, fish and hunt.
Latah is derived by combining the first syllables of these Nez Perce words, to mean, "pine and pestle place".

This area was first formed as Lah-Toh County in 1864 with Coeur d'Alene as the county seat, in 1867 the name Lah-Toh was dropped when the area was placed in Nez Perce County.
In 1888 the U. Congress created the county as we know it, the 16th Idaho county and the only Idaho county created by Congress.
The name is Nez Perce and means "the place of pine trees and sestle," because the Indians found stones here suitable for pulverizing camas roots and shade under the pine trees in which to work.

County Extension offices were overwhelmed with requests for horticultural information.
David Gibby, then WSU Cooperative Extension Agent for King and Pierce counties, recalls that responding to the demand for information was an "enormous problem." He tried various methods of reaching the public, including extensive use of mass media, but each effort sparked an even greater volume of calls.

The Latah Trail is an important and wonderful addition to Latah County’s park system, but it is an enormous undertaking that will take some time to complete.
I would encourage county residents to get on the Latah County’s e-mail list for notice of the Commissioners agendas and proceedings and I would hope to take advantage of e-mail service provided at the Court House for elected officials.
Here in Latah County, I’ve served as Chair of the Latah County Democrats; Co-Chair of the League of Women Voters, Moscow; and President of the local chapter of AARP.

Lazelle was born in Isabella County, Michigan, on September 12, 1862, and she has brothers and sisters as follows: Evaline, wife of A. Harvey, and living in Latah County; Frank C., living in Palouse; Ella, wife of A. Littke, living in Palouse.

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 provided Latah County with large picture diagrams that will be placed in the voting booths to show how to use the ballots.

However, in the brutal beating and hog-tying of Collete Cohen, the actions of Latah County sheriff's deputies and emergency physician Gregory Miller are so horrible that the media was not called in to trash the Cohens.
The Cohens have uncovered what can best be described as a family court extortion scam that the county has been operating to capitalize upon the misery of families who mistakenly believe that the government is there to help them.
The story begins May 30, 1999, when a domestic dispute between Collette and Bob Cohen resulted in Bob calling the Latah County Sheriff's Department which arrived and threw Collette into jail with a "suicide watch." And thus began the county process to destroy the Cohen family for profit.
