There are several words for 'fire' or 'blaze' in Latatian.

In issue 49 you have a letter from a Ingemar Olsson who uses the word Latatian and WB seems unsure of this word.
On page 14 of the Discworld Companion-Updated Edition it says "And the Old Language (Latatian) of Ankh-Morpork has been rendered into Latin" Hopes that clears matters up.
I thought you might want to know that Terry's Fifth Elephant is ranked no 13 in the American fantasy/science fiction bestsellers.

The long name he gave for Thud might be a parody of the name of a game played in the Welsh Mabinogion called gwyddbwyll, especially as the board comes from Llamedos, which is to Wales what Latatian is to Latin.
And in the Dream of Rhonabwy the game is played by Arthur and Owein at the same time as they negotiate with messengers, so it appears in a political context there too.

This has more in common with Scottish than English heraldry.
These are normally rendered into Latatian, the ancient language of Ankh-Morpork, in the same way that Roundworld mottoes are commonly in Latin, though French and English are also used.
Indeed, the whole language of heraldry is worth noting.

I somehow got the impression that it has to do with the Viking invasions around year 900, but those were mainly Danes.
