  Tool: Lateralus (2001): Reviews
Lateralus takes the L.A. band over the edge with elongated musical movements that simmer under heavy-duty distortion, Middle Eastern percussion and freakish guitar-and-drum time signatures that will make musical mathematicians (i.e., prog-rock dorks) as excited as the kids in the mosh pit.
"Lateralus" is primarily a collection of puzzling time changes, haunting vocals and beyond-intricate percussive patterns that create a theme rooted more in Eastern philosophy than in rock and roll.
Lateralus could have been released four years ago, for all the sonic progression that's contained (or not contained) within its 79 minutes.

Lateralus, perhaps because it is the album's "title track", serves as the central clue for a puzzle that a friend of mine had read about somewhere on the internet.
For the song to be in the 'middle' of the album it would have to be the seventh track in sequence, here having six tracks on either side of it.
The lyrics of Lateralus justify this break in the spiral, almost instructing: "spiral out, keep going, spiral out, keep going." I went back to Lateralus to find the next clue.

Stylistically, Lateralus is a defiantly progressive album, having emerged from a five year legal tussle with Tool's former label.
In spite of its unusual and complex content, the album still became a commercial success in the United States quite apart from the mid- to late- 1990s explosion of nu-metal bands like Linkin Park.
In particular, Carey told an interviewer about Keenan's remark that the time signatures of the main riff in "Lateralus" (9-8-7) also represented a step in the Fibonacci sequence (the sixteenth step, as it turns out).

You can stop reading right now if you want to, because I've said the most relevant issues on "Lateralus", so if you are a Tool fan, you may not be surprised if I say that "Lateralus" is inferior to "Ænima" and possibly you may be able to tell why I think so.

 Thief ZERO's Vault - Tool - Lateralus
I believe that was one of Tool's intentions with Lateralus...unlike Radiohead, who refused to release any singles off of their album Kid A, Tool have made a CD that the radio stations won't want to play...their songs are just too long for the average listener.
Many of the tracks on Lateralus blend seamlessly into each other, giving the impression that the regularly 8 minute songs are, in fact, 16 minutes long.
Much of Lateralus is more refined than Tool's previous outages (Ænima for instance), and this is most likely due to the influence of A Perfect Circle (Maynard's side project).

If you make it through the first two songs of its chaotic dementia without running for the lights, you're a stronger person than me. The hordes of recent shock rock wannabes dress in fl and paint their faces with blood just to get the Christian Coalition's goat.
As one song fades into another, Lateralus begins to feel like one continuous neurotic jam session, with songs evolving, mutating and recreating themselves in slightly different forms.
But Lateralus proves that Tool still know how to crawl into your brain and raise the hairs on your neck - whether the lights are on or not.

Alternately challenging and frustrating, the wildly complex, 79-minute Lateralus sounds as if Maynard James Keenan and company spent the bulk of the five years since Aenima tweaking, deconstructing, and generally mucking about with the new disc's 12 pieces.
Perhaps the most striking thing about Lateralus is its sheer density: "Parabola" wraps one of Keenan's most dissipated-sounding vocals in a haze of guitar fuzz thick enough to prompt a travel advisory, while its thematic doppelgänger, "Parabol," pins the melody down with layers of oppressive echo and creepy effects.
Lateralus, and I suppose Tool in general, is by no means heavy metal.
