Alternatively, L. calcarifer may be interpreted as exhibiting a strong seasonality in growth: it grows fastest in length at the start of autumn, grows less until a full stop in the middle of winter, shrinks until the middle of spring, and then resumes a positive growth for another cycle.
The barramundi L. calcarifer is a protandrous fish found in estuaries and other coastal areas of the Indo-West Pacific (Griffin, 1987).

Barramundi(Lates calcarifer) are known as Sea Bass in southeast Asia.
Barramundi(Lates calcarifer) are a tropical species requiring water temperatures between 20° C and 30° C. Commercial growth rates require temperatures above 25° C. Being euryhaline (able to tolerate a wide range of salinities), barramundi can be grown in sea, brackish or freshwater.
Barramundi(Lates calcarifer), in the wild, spend their juvenile years in fresh or brackish water before migrating as adults to estuaries to spawn.

Organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) residues were monitored in muscle samples of Lates calcarifer, Liza subviridis and Cynoglossus cynoglossus collected during October-December (Dry season) 1996 and May-July (Wet season) 1997 from the Ganges estuary.
OCP residues were more in the muscles of Lates calcarifer because of its carnivorous characteristic, and lowest in Liza subviridis, a herbivorous fish.
The OCP residue concentrations were found in order of heptachlor>dieldrin>DDTs>aldrin for Lates calcarifer and in order of DDTs>heptachlor>dieldrin>aldrin for the Cynoglossus cynoglossus.

The potential impacts of introducing barramundi (Lates calcarifer) for the purpose of recreational fishing into Lake Kununurra, a tropical impoundment in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, are predicted by dietary comparisons with the resident fishes of the lake.
calcarifer fed primarily on teleosts and decopods, and are known to prey on the majority of the fish species found in Lake Kununurra.
calcarifer to Lake Kununurra has the potential to influence the resident fish community through competition (for food and habitat) and predation, it is likely that its effects will be minor.

 About Barramundi - Lates calcarifer
Estuaries, creeks and coastal headlands fish well for barra right through the year, often peaking in the late dry season from September to December.
Some of the best barra action is found in the Top End's big tidal rivers early in the dry season - usually late March through to June.
Barra congregate at creek mouths and floodwater run-offs as the wet season floods start to fall and provide top lure-casting action.
