Latgallians lived in the central and the eastern parts of Latvia which are now known as Vidzeme and Latgale.
Those in Latgale were cut off from the rest of Latvia and have preserved some of their language and culture to this day.
During the first independence of Latvia (1920-1940), Latgale was the only region of Latvia with strong regional political parties.

Latgale (Latgola) is an ancient and singular state in the eastern part of Latvia.
Latgale is separated from the rest of the Latvian states by three rivers: the Pededze, the Aiviekste and the Daugava.
There are large peat–bogs in Latgale: the Krievu–Jersikas bog in the Preili district, the Kreici and Krenova bogs in the Ludza district, the Struzani bog in the Rezekne district.

Although there were small minorities of Germans in the provinces of Curonia (in the west), Livonia (in the north), and Zemgale (in the centre), the second-largest non-Latvian community was to be found in the southeastern province of Latgale around the city of Daugavpils.
Latgale's proximity to Lithuania and Russia was reflected by the presence of large Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, and Jewish communities, while even Latgale's ethnic Latvians were Catholic, as opposed to the Protestant Lutheranism of Latvians elsewhere.
Even in the heterogenous province of Latgale, indirect pressure by the Catholic Church upon non-Latvian Catholics to assimilate and a high rate of intermarriage had begun to create a dominant population of Latvian-speaking Catholics of diverse ethnic origins in Latgale.

Historically, Latgale was the whole region of Latvia from the River Daugava in the East to the Livian tribe’s border and the Slavs’ borders.
Ancient Latgale (nowadays Vidzeme and Latgale) was under Polish rule in 16th century, and was called “Pardaugavas hercogiste”.
Latgale greets tourists with its picturesque views, varied mosaic landscapes with many lakes, forests and hills, and geological curiosities – great stones (the biggest Latvian great stone is situated in Nicgale (130 m3)), glens and slopes.

In prewar Latgale Jews were in the majority in every major city in Latgale and in many towns while the rural population was mostly Latvian.

For a time in the 19th century, Latgale came close to being part of Lutheran Latvia--Latgale is firmly Roman Catholic, but the Daugava river that runs through it meets the sea at Rîga--but perhaps fortunately this fate was avoided.
Latgale must rank as one of the poorest provinces in all of greater Scandinavia, but Marija Himputas for one is unconcerned.

Latgale Trotter is a small horse with a dry constitution, small head, long neck, delicate frame, well defined veins and small compact hooves.
Latgale Trotter in stud books of Latvia are marked with studmark Rk (American Trotter with ARk). Trotting races between the owners of the horses took place both on the roads and on frozen lakes in winter.
The numbers of Latgale Trotters were diminishing and the quality improved in the 70-ies and 80-ies.
