While their historical differences date back to earlier periods, the Latgalians and the western Latvians (also referred to as “baltiesi”—Baltic Latvians) were under separate rule from the mid-sixteenth century to the establishment of a unified independent Latvia in 1918.
The Latgalians are an Indo-European people who came to the region approximately in the first few centuries B.C. Together with the Lithuanians, they are considered part of the ancient East Baltic tribes; while the Curonians, Prussians, and Selonians belonged to the west Baltic group.
With the German conquest of the area in the late medieval period the Latgalian name was replaced by the Latin “Livonia” for the livs (livones-libisi) whose land was united to that of the Latgalians.

Although the Lower Neris suffered a greater influence of the Western Balts than did the territories between the mouths of the Nemunas and the Dnepr, the language of Prussian type did not convert the Lithuanian language into a constituent part of the world of the Western Balts.
Thus, the Latgalians whose position was rather weak were just forced by Lithuanian dukes to pay regular tributes, had castles freely erected on their lands by the Lithuanians; the process of the Latgalians becoming northern Lithuanians took place.
In strong Kursh or Prussia, co-operation between the groups of noblemen had to be more active and marriages with the Lithuanians more frequent, although these had to be inevitably confirmed by the elements of military prestige and demand of contributions.

The slow second section uses a Latgalian folk song - the first of many uses of such melodies from the part of Latvia where the composer was born.
The Latgalian Landscapes, however, do not use any actual folk music and its three loosely related sections point toward the composer's later cycles of symphonic poems (of which The Cloudy Mountain will appear next month).
The second symphony owes much to Sibelius in its brooding atmosphere and its use of thematic cells to generate musical material as well as to Franck in its use of thematic material; it also shows the first signs of what a fine orchestrator Ivanovs was to become.
