Lathe, machine tool that shapes metal, wood, or other material by rapidly turning it against a stationary cutting device.
A lathe, the oldest and most common type of turning machine, holds and rotates metal or wood while a cutting tool shapes the material.
Among the basic machine tools are the lathe, the shaper, the planer, and the milling machine.

 Lathe - LoveToKnow 1911
It may be a modified form of "lath," for in an early form of lathe the rotation is given by a treadle or spring lath attached to the ceiling.
It was formerly a judicial division, the court of the lathe being superior to that of the hundred.
In this it differs from the rape of Sussex, which was a geographical rather than an administrative division.

In a metalworking lathe, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool, which is usually fixed to a solid moveable mounting called the "toolpost", which is then moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motors.
In a glassworking lathe a torch to soften the glass may be either hand-held, or mounted to a banjo/crossslide.
Lathes with a vertical axis are - not suprisingly - "vertical lathes".

In woodworking and metalworking, a lathe is a machine tool whichspins a block of material so that when abrasive or cutting tools are applied to the block, it can be shaped to produce an objectwhich has symmetry about the axis of rotation (ie round).

I first tried using the mill as a vertical lathe, chucking the material to be turned in a spindle-mounted chuck, and making some cutting tools to cut from the side.
This lathe is also a 7x14 lathe with a fairly long bed for holding chucks and drills in the tailstock.
I obtained the lathe and used it for about 6 months with some accessories shipped to get the feel of how stiff it was and what it could and could not do.

The index plate was made from a cast iron 8" lathe chuck backing plate mounted on a dividing head and drilled on a drill press with six concentric circles of evenly spaced holes of the numbers 84, 96, 108, 120, 144 and 192.
The Grizzly lathe has proved to be an excellent tool to adapt to ornamental turning, serving as both the ornamental lathe in use and the machine tool to create new apparatus as needed.

The second option is to use the lathe spindle to drive the gear cutter and use the dividing head, mounted on the lathe's vertical slide with its output shaft vertical, to hold the wheel blank.
If you wish to divide a circle into a given number of equal divisions, the number of rotations (or fractional rotations) of the input shaft necessary to produce a movement of one division in the output shaft is given by dividing the drive ratio by the number of divisions required.
The division plate blank is a 1/16" thick brass disc, 3" in diameter, with a central half inch hole and three countersunk 6BA clearance holes to match those in the carrier.

Blanchard’s innovation was a device, known as a duplicator, that caused the cutting tool of his lathe to follow along a pattern thereby creating exact duplicates of the piece that the pattern was designed to produce.
This improvement to the lathe is noted as being one of the ten most important inventions of all time.
The division between civilian and military space activities has always been somewhat vague and the establishment of a civilian space program was the result of political posturing during the Cold War.

A wide range of accessories was available for the cataract lathe which enabled it to perform a variety of specialised tasks; a further selection can be seen here.
When a greater range was required a special holder, to which division plates could be attached by three screws, could be clamped on the end of the headstock spindle.
The complete collet holder could be lifted from the V block to ease the insertion of parts; the two knurled thumb nuts inboard of the collet drawbar wheel acted as an adjustable stop to set the depth of cut.

The Carraige and lead screw are in many ways the heart of the lathe.
They hold the tool bit (the part that cuts the metal), and allows for the movement of the bit against the spinning metal.
All screws are of 20 pitch (threads per inch), thus allowing for even division (one turn is 1/20 inch or 5/100 or.05, 1/50 turn is 1/1000 inch or.001), to allow for precision movements of bit to a thousand of an inch.

Hence, my design for compound division uses a supplementary 30:1 worm drive to position the division plate, and 40 divisions on the graduated thimble fitted to the secondary worm shaft, giving positioning of the output shaft to a theoretical resolution of 1/100th of a degree.
However, as compound division involves keeping track of two independent movements, it is likely that users will find it convenient to have a set of hole circles that cover the most-used divisions for their applications.
It is then straightforward to mount a blank division plate on the business end of the dividing head, mount the dividing head on the cross-slide, and use a sharp scriber mounted in the lathe headstock to mark out the protractor.

 Facing Operations
To safely perform a facing operation the end of the workpiece must be as close as possible to the jaws of the chuck.
It is important that the tip of the cutting tool be right at the centerline of the lathe; if it is too high or tool low you will be left with a little bump at the center of the face.
With the lathe running at fairly low speed, bring a smooth cut file up to the end of the workpiece at a 45 degree angle and apply a little pressure to the file.
