Lathe wraps a 2D spline around a center point to make it a 3D shape which is perfectly round on the harmonizing axis on which it was spun.
A Lathe works the same way a carpenter's lathe works in reality.
Create an open spline reflecting what you want your lathe to look like.

Lathe (tool) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In woodturning, one subtype of a live center is a cup center, which is a cone of metal surrounded by an annular ring of metal that decreases the chances of the workpiece splitting.
In a metalworking lathe, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool, which is usually fixed to a solid moveable mounting called the "toolpost", which is then moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motors.
In metal spinning, a disk of sheet metal is held perpendicularly to the main axis of the lathe, and tools with polished tips (spoons) are hand held, but levered by hand against fixed posts, to develop large amounts of torque/pressure that deform the spinning sheet of metal.

Tailstocks and Bench Centers (11 companies) Tailstocks are used on lathes and other machine tools to support one end of the work piece through contact with a live or dead center.
Live Centers (15 companies) Live centers are used to hold or support a work piece in a lathe or other machine tools - often between the headstock and tailstock.
Dead Centers (9 companies) Dead centers are used to hold or support a workpiece in a lathe or other machine tool.

 lathe
When the lathe was set at a higher speed, inertia made the lathe start slower, and it took longer to come up to full speed.
The third lathe was for myself, which I finally had the free time to rebuild a couple of weeks ago.
I don't really have any specifications on these lathes, except I suspect they are possibly 1940's vintage, weigh somewhere in the ballpark of 500 pounds, have approximately 1 Hp, 3-phase motors, and use slip pulleys to provide infinite speed adjustment.

 Engine Lathe Functions and Controls
The steady rest is clamped to the ways of the lathe and adjustable rest points are adjusted to perfectly center the part while, at the same time, supporting the part during machining.
Small bench engine lathes have a 9 inch or less swing and have a 20 to 40 inch between centers.
The spindle of the lathe has many attachments which facilitate turning, boring, facing, etc. The spindles have various configurations that you should be aware of.

 Lathe - Rests
One promising thought was that you can buy a cheap steady rest for one of those 7x10 imported lathes from Harbor Freight for $25, make a base for it to sit on at the correct height, maybe put some screw adjustment on it to center it crosswise and away you go.
The steady that came with my lathe was for a later model 9", I have a 1928 junior the bed is wider, so I had to cut the v section out and move it over and weld it back on.
The difference between the 2 lathes is the width between the rails.

Lathe (metal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A center lathe or engine lathe may be considered the basis for the metal lathe and is the type most often used by the general machinist or hobbyist.
A mandrel or chuck is mounted to the headstock of the lathe.
The usage of the term metal lathe may also be considered somewhat outdated these days, plastics and other composite materials are in wide use and with appropriate modifications, the same principles and techniques may be applied to their machining as that used for metal.

The division disc is the most critical piece of our indexer.

 Home Made Metal Spinning Lathe
Instead of gripping the work as you would on a metal lathe, the work is actually clamped between a specially turned form and a live-center on the tailstock.
By the time I got to this part of the lathe, the prospect of having to mill out another cross-piece and clamping bar was all to much -- so instead the toolpost clamps to the closest rail of the lathe bed -- halving the number of machining operations required.
Most of the operations required to build the lathe were done on my 7x10 minilathe and my RF30 mill-drill -- it's quite impressive what these bits of oriental iron can do if you're prepared to take your time and work within their limits.

 Math Challenge: A Lathe Problem
However, if you want to lathe a circle where the center is above the axis, well then you HAVE a torus.
I have Foley's Introduction to Computer Graphics (the 1994 re-printed and updated version of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice, 1990) :) I figured NURBS could do it, because it is a rational based spline.
For instance, the example I stated before could not be done with a torus.
