 The Dangers of Liberation Theology
At the same time, a similar process of ferment and discussion took place among the area’s Roman Catholic theologians at the Episcopal Conference of Latin America in 1968.
Another reason Liberation Theology caught on is that it combines the most important and emotion-packed elements of modern Latin American culture: Marxism, nationalism, opposition to the U.S., revolution, and an interest in the five central Latin American social problems–hunger, poverty, lack of education, disease, and political injustice.
Among Protestants, Liberation Theology was born within a group of theologians associated with the "Church and Society in Latin America" movement (ISAL in Spanish).

The Dress and Address of Deacons
While the 1969 Roman instruction regulates styles of address among prelates and gives the national episcopal conferences the power to regulate ecclesiastical styles of address among the lower clergy, the American episcopal conference has not taken advantage of this faculty.
The use of the style "Father" by secular priests of the Latin church is a fairly recent usage promoted in the last century by Cardinal Manning, who in 1865 became the second archbishop of Westminster.
By the same token all deacons by virtue of their ordination have the right to their clerical style of address and cannot, absent judicial process, be perpetually deprived of it.

 Printer Friendly - Spring 2005, VOL 4.2
In the process of drafting his presentation for the 1979 meeting of the Latin American Episcopal Conference in Puebla, Mexico, and in preparing his fourth pastoral letter, Romero took the unusual step of administering a questionnaire to parishes and local communities and incorporating their responses into his deliberations.
Instead of preaching a homily on El Salvador’s patronal feast day that year, he presented an outline of what would be his last pastoral letter.
Romero gratefully acknowledged the people’s direct participation in the drafting process, humbly sharing authorship with them in accordance with his interpretation of Lumen gentium (the Vatican II Dogmatic Constitution on the Church).

Contemporary Latin American liberation theology was birthed in August of 1968 in Medellin, Columbia, at the Second General Episcopal Conference of Roman Catholic bishops, known as CELAM II.
“Theology as critical reflection on historical praxis is a liberating theology, a theology of the liberating transformation of the history of mankind and also therefore that part of mankind.
The paradigmatic event in biblical history for liberation theology is the Exodus, as seen both in the oppressed condition of Israel under Egyptian rule and God’s activity of deliverance.
