 LATIN RITE FACTS AND INFORMATION
Latin Rite, in the singular and accompanied, in English, by the definite article ("The Latin Rite"), is a term by which documents of the Catholic Church designate the particular_Church, distinct from the Eastern_Rite Churches, that developed in western Europe and northern Africa, where Latin was the language of education and culture.
Characteristic of the Latin Rite (in the first-mentioned sense) are obligatory celibacy of priests, Confirmation after reaching the age of reason (but not necessarily as late as pre-adolescence), direct appointment of bishops by the Pope, honorary titles of patriarch and primate, and, of course, the Latin-rite liturgies.
The term ''Latin rite'' is used also, in singular or plural, to refer to one or more of the forms of sacred liturgy used in different parts of this Latin Church.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Latin Church
All to the west of this was the Latin Church.
The Latin Church is simply that vast portion of the Catholic body which obeys the Latin patriarch, which submits to the pope, not only in papal, but also in patriarchal matters.
From this conception we see that the practical disappearance of the Gallican Rite, however much the archeologist may regret it, is justified by the general principle that rite should follow patriarchate.

The Latin Mass Society of Ireland
Latin remained the official language of the Catholic Church and, at the end of the Middle Ages, interest started to grow in classical Latin as a means of artistic and literary expression.
Latin is a member of the Italic sub-family of the Indo-European family of languages, which spread across Europe and as far as India about 15,000 years ago.
He said: "The Latin language is assuredly worthy of being defended with great care instead of being scorned; for the Latin Church it is the most abundant source of Christian civilization and the richest treasury of piety.

 Western Rite
The Western Rite is a ministry of the Antiochian Christian Archdiocese of North America, and in full canonical communion and unity of purpose with the several Orthodox jurisdictions of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in America (SCOBA).
Western Rite Orthodoxy has proven itself to be an excellent missionary out-reach to those who seek the assurance of the Orthodox Catholic Faith and who find themselves better rooted in their own western spiritual ethos than the Byzantine character of the eastern rites.
When the Latin Church in the west separated itself from the unity of the Orthodox Church, the venerable and ancient Western liturgy was lost to the Church.

The Rites Of The Catholic Church
Also, as a matter of record there are a number of other "so-called rites" known as 'historic rites of religious orders', which are not truly rites per se, but are mainly variations of the Latin Rite to which they belong.
N.B. Up until the end of the 19th century the Latin Rite of the Western Church comprised two other "Church Liturgies", which are now extinct, namely:
After a period of tension with the local Latin bishops, the Serbs in Croatia were given their own diocesan bishop by Pope Pius VI on 17 June 1777, with his See at Krizevci.

Pope Benedict XIV - Allatae Sunt - On the Observance of Oriental Rites - 26 July 1755
Cardinal Kollonitz advised Pope Clement XI that allowing Latin missionaries in Hungary to celebrate in the Greek rite whenever this appeared necessary, while remaining at liberty to return to the Latin rite, would be beneficial to the Church.
Since the Latin rite is the rite of the holy Roman church and this church is mother and teacher of the other churches, the Latin rite should be preferred to all other rites.
Latin priests could not easily travel to the few Latin churches there to celebrate Mass since those churches were so far from their own place of residence.

Whatever Happened to the Traditional Latin Roman Rite?
In the old rite the Church sets forth in a fully explicit way her doctrine of the Communion of Saints by which we are united in a bond of fellowship with all the faithful living and dead.
The traditional Latin Mass is now the only form of Mass available to us in which all these qualities abound, and where every word spoken, every gesture performed by the priest as he offers the Divine Victim to the Heavenly Father is perfectly attuned to this supreme act of worship.
In 1984 the Holy Father issued an Indult for the traditional Latin Mass to be celebrated world-wide.

 Tridentine Mass (latin rite)
We have descriptions of how these rites were carried out and one can see the baptismal fonts such as still exist in some of the churches of the Middle East into which a person had to walk.
What is remarkable is, that despite the diversity of rites recognized by the Church as valid, all of them retain the same essential core.
And so it is that the Apostles, while preserving the essentials, adapted the rites of the Church to the various lands in which they found themselves.

The Indult Tridentine Rite of Mass
In fact, no bishop of the Roman Rite can prohibit the use of the Latin version of the Novus Ordo Missae (which, in fact, is the official version) or the use of Gregorian chant in his diocese, precisely because they should be the preferred usages in the Mass.
While the Council did allow for the use of the vernacular, it specifically stated that Latin was to remain the official language of the Church and of Her prayers.
Note well: the abandonment of Latin and Gregorian chant were not mandated by the bishops (and most certainly not by the Council), yet it was tolerated in most places.

The Traditional Latin Rite in the Church Today
It will be of particular interest as it graphically explains the fears and trepidations of a young priest celebrating his first old rite Latin Mass (about 12 months after ordination), his reaction to that Mass, and his subsequent devotion and commitment to the traditional liturgy of the Church.
Do something about the love you have for the traditional Latin rite of Mass; for example, invite others to come with you to worship God with you, that they may see the treasure which Almighty God has given us.
But there are other rites at the moment in the west; they may be particular and localised but they exist.

He sets aside a "memorial of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ" (Chaldean; usual Malabar Rite, "Mother of God"; but according to Raulin's Latin of the Malabar Rite, "Mother of God Himself and of the Lord Jesus Christ"), and of the patron of the Church (in the Malabar Rite, "of St.Thomas").
The Malabar Rite was revised in a Catholic direction by Aleixo de Menezes, Archbishop of Goa, and the revision was authorized by the Synod of Diamper in 1599.

HOMILY IN LATIN RITE AT KYIV
On Sunday morning, 24 June, the Holy Father celebrated Mass in the Latin Rite for the Solemnity of the Nativity of St John the Baptist at Chayka Airport in Kyiv.
For the faithful of the Latin Rite I am thinking, in particular, of the Shrines of Berdichiv and of Letichiv.
Among the faithful of the Byzantine Rite the Shrines of Zarvanytsia and of Hoshiv are greatly venerated.

Catholic Community Forum Discussion Groups - More than one Rite on the Latin (Western) Church?
Thus the Byzantine Rite may, at various times, use the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, or of St. Basil, while the Roman or Latin Rite would normally use the Liturgy of Pope Paul VI in Latin or the vernacular, and under certain circumstances may use the so-called "Tridentine Rite" or, more correctly, Liturgy.
In addition to religious orders in the Latin Church, some dioceses also conserved their own rites: Milan in Italy, had the most venerable Ambrosian rite; Lyon in France, had the lyonnais rite; Antioche, Alexandria had also their respective rites.
I am sure that there must be a very good reason out there to justify this suppression of the older rites in favour of the new missal: I am not enlightened enough to see it.

 Traditional Latin Mass
Cardinal Ratzinger's remarks clearly revealed that the "strategy" of the Church is that the Old Rite should stand side-by-side with the New Rite and that further advancement of the implementation of the moto proprio Ecclesia Dei must be accomplished by educating the bishops as to their duty with respect to the Traditional Latin Rite.
During the last weekend of October 1998, the tenth anniversary of these events was observed with several Traditional Latin Rite Masses, as well as a Conference devoted to the current status of the Traditional Latin Mass within the liturgical life of the Church.
Cardinal Ratzinger also observed that the "strategy" of the Church was that the Traditional Latin Rite should stand side-by-side with the Novus Ordo Mass in much the same way the Dominican Rite stood side-by-side the Latin Rite for many centuries.

Catholic World News : Latin-Rite Married Priests Meet To Discuss Role In Church
Latin-rite Catholic priests are sometimes dispensed from their vow of celibacy in order to marry, but they are then banned from exercising their priestly faculties, except in the direst emergencies, such as the Last Rites.
Priests of some Eastern Rites are allowed to marry, and some married Anglican priests are allowed to become Catholic priests after conversion.
According to the Movement of Married Catholic Priests (MPC), the number of married priests in the world has risen to 100,000 although that figure is only an estimate because the Catholic hierarchy "hides the numbers," and many married priests are unwilling to come forward.

Medieval Sourcebook: Mass of The Roman Rite [Latin/English]
It was only with the Catholic response to the Protestant Reformation, however, that a standard rite of mass was imposed on the entire Latin Church at the order of the Council of Trent.
After the Second Vatican Council, an extensive and radical revision of the Latin rite was undertaken.
Within these variations a number of distinct liturgical families can be discerned, both distinct rites, such as the various Easter liturgies, or the "Ambrosian" rite of Milan, and variations on the Roman pattern as in the English "Sarum Missal".

EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION IN THE LATIN RITE AND BEATIFICATIONS
A good and faithful servant of the Lord, motivated by deep spirituality and unceasing charity, he was loved and esteemed by all his fellow citizens, regardless of their religious convictions, rite or nationality.
At the end of the Mass he begged their intercession, "Church of Lviv of the Latins, may all the saints who have enriched your history intercede for you.
He came to the aid of the needy, for whom he nurtured such a love that even beyond death he wanted to be with them, choosing to be laid to rest in the Janow cemetery in Lviv, where paupers were buried.

 Tridentine Latin Rite Missal Project
But for now, we are seminarians who love the Tridentine Latin Mass, and wish to bring others to the understanding and love for it which we have felt.
Please make some reference to the Latin Mass in the subject line of your email, lest it be mistaken for spam and deleted.
This, therefore, is the reason for this project: to provide the texts of the Proper of Seasons and Proper of the Saints to those faithful Catholics who wish a greater understanding of the beauty of the old Latin Mass.
