When placed in ethnic and/or American studies, the weight is placed on Latinos as a minority in the United States; when placed in the Spanish department and/or in Latin-American studies, the suggestion is that Hispanics are an extremity of the Spanish-speaking Americas in El Norte.
There was no Latino studies in the '60s because a rubric encompassing various national groups from the Americas was, by and large, inconceivable at that time -- even though the Cuban revolutionary thinker José Martí, everybody's favorite precursor, wrote manifestos on the subject in the 1880s.
As in black studies, the intellectual model is interdisciplinary, drawing on a multiplicity of tools used by anthropologists, historians, sociologists, political scientists, literary critics, and cultural-studies specialists.

 Latino Studies Fellowship Application
Fellowships in Latino Studies are offered by the Smithsonian Institution to provide opportunities for U.S. Latino/a predoctoral students and postdoctoral and senior investigators to conduct research related to U.S. Latino history, art and culture in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff, and utilizing the resources of the Institution.
Latino Studies predoctoral, postdoctoral and senior fellowships are usually awarded for periods of three to twelve months.
Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the proposal's merit, the ability of the applicant to carry out the proposed research and study, and the extent to which the Smithsonian, through its staff members and resources, can contribute to the fellow's proposed research.

The Latino/a Studies minor is an interdisciplinary academic program that critically examines the social, historical, and cultural experiences of people of Latin American descent living in the United States.
Through core and elective courses, the Latino/a Studies minor provides students with foundational knowledge and a broad overview of the experiences, histories, and cultures of the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the U.S. Students are also required to take one course focusing on Latin America.

Collectively, these studies show that schools can make a dramatic difference in the dropout rates, school success, and college enrollment rates of at-risk Latino youth.
Nine sources of influence were selected for this study, and the sources were of one particular type- significant persons in the students' lives who influenced them to pursue and complete university studies.

The origins of the various Chicano and Puerto Rican Studies programs at that time lay less in a slow evolution of scholarly interests than in the urgent demands of angry students and a few faculty who insisted that universities begin to meet the educational needs of undeserved local Latina/os.
Nowhere, however, have the changes been as great as in the way in which sociologists conceptualize the Latino population itself - and especially the poorer members.
The study of race and ethnicity has been a major specialty within American sociology for the past century, but in the 60's few sociologists who were not directly involved with Latina/os knew or cared about them.

 Latino studies is focus of conference
"The conference is an opportunity to engage the Cornell community in a much-needed discussion of the contributions of Latino studies to the research and teaching mission of the university," said Pedro Cabán, LSP director.

 A Brief History of  the Latino Studies Program
Originally the Student Committee for Latin American Studies proposed a number of things, one of which was the establishment of an interdisciplinary program in Latino Studies as well as a restructuring of the relationship between Latin American Studies, the Institute for Latin American Studies, and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
As it stands, the current major behind the Latino Studies Program was approved on April 3, 1996, on the third day of what would be a fifteen day hunger strike in support of establishing an Ethnic Studies Department on Columbia's campus.
The accepted proposal was a combined effort of the Student-Faculty Committee for Latino Studies, who worked on it for approximately for four months.
