CNNSI.com - 2002 World Cup - World Cup Hall of Fame: Grzegorz Lato - Wednesday May 08, 2002 01:40 PM
Lato's career coincided almost exactly with the golden era of Polish soccer, which began with Olympic gold in Munich in 1972 and ended a decade later with third place at the World Cup in Spain, a repeat of the Poles' impressive finish in 1974.
Lato secured the consolation of finishing as top scorer with a brilliant goal -- his seventh of the competition -- to beat Brazil in the third place playoff.
By 1982 Zbigniew Boniek was Poland's new hero but Lato was still a permanent presence, contributing one goal, as the Poles rolled to another bronze medal, losing out to eventual winner Italy in the semifinals.

The Netherlands faced Brazil, who had been less impressive in beating Argentina (2-1) and East Germany (1-0), while West Germany faced Poland, who continued to impress in beating Sweden (1-0 with a goal by Lato and a penalty save by Jan Tomaszewski) and Yugoslavia (2-1 with goals by Lato and Deyna).
The Dutch faced a much-changed Brazil from the 1970 vintage and it was the Netherlands who were now playing fantasy football.

 Football Pole stars rising
Poland did qualify and, after beating Argentina and Italy and ending up with the tournament's top scorer in Grzegorz Lato, made it to third place in what turned out to be a top-quality World Cup.
If they don't, you may be as surprised to learn that Poland is a mighty footballing nation as you would have been, until very recently, to discover that the Canadians had the first clue about cricket.
They then made it to the last eight in 1978, under the captaincy of the unforgettably elegant Kazimierz Deyna, and got third place again in 1982, Zbigniew Boniek fixing himself in the minds of all who saw him as one of the all-time great strikers.

Match Report - High Legh v Mobberley
(Rumour has it that they are on the verge of signing Zbigniew “Zibi” Boniek and Grzegorz Lato, two world cup legends, before the deadline and in time for next weeks clash with Stretton.!)
This though, acted as a kick up the backsides to the home team who realised that with only 1 Mobberley forward to mark, there was no need for a back 4 and the spare man pushed into the midfield.
They duly replied with a good goal from their Polish International Szalwicki who they picked up on a Bosman in the summer apparently.

The Myth of Edge-On-Edge Parrying in Medieval Swordplay
In fact, many of Marozzo’s teachings for his light, single-hand, cut-and-thrust, side-sword ( spada di lato) only make sense when we understand his counter-strikes are not “one, two” movements but single actions that allow him to simultaneously deflect and cut back.
As modern translator and researcher Grzegorz Zabinski points out, “Although the phrase
Marozzo wrote that, “the art of striking is but little in comparison with a knowledge of the parries, which is a fine and more useful thing.” But just being able to block would not be of much use …unless of course his parries were also simultaneous counterstrikes.
