Caffè macchiato - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Macchiato" simply means "marked" or "stained," and in the case of caffè macchiato, this means literally "espresso stained/marked with milk." Traditionally it is made with one shot of espresso, and significantly less milk or milk foam.
Another variant of the drink, latte macchiato, conversely means "milk stained/marked (with espresso)", which involves a higher steamed milk-to-espresso ratio.

The Macchiato (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The macchiato is so often regarded, and indeed made as, a cappucino in miniature.
To correctly construct the macchiato, you will need, in addition to the usual acoutrements, an extra glass or beaker in which to froth the milk.
Now, carefully spoon as much froth as is required onto the top of the espresso, being sure that no liquid milk seeps in as this will colour the espresso and be the beginnings of a miniature cappucino: the aim is perfect separation, two defined layers that combine on drinking.

In Italian these are known as "caffè e latte" (commonly "caffelatte"), literally "coffee and milk", analogous to (but not the same as!) the French "écaf au lait", and latte
If you ordered a "caffè latte," you would get a beverage with far less milk in it than what has now come to be called a "latte." Keep in mind, ordering a "latte" in a café in Italy will result in the barista serving you a plain glass of milk.

Coffee Review :: The World's Leading Coffee Buying Guide
Caffe latte has a greater proportion of milk to coffee than a cappuccino does, and tastes weaker and milkier.
Such combinations of hot milk and coffee have long been the favored breakfast drink of southern Europeans, although the term caffe latte itself appears to be little used in Italy, where those who want a breakfast coffee with more milk than froth usually order a latte macchiato, or perhaps a cappuccino without foam.
Note that in the cappuccino, the milk and froth are added to the coffee, in the caffe latte they are poured simultaneously into a large bowl or glass, mixing them, while in the latte macchiato, the espresso is poured into the milk and froth, creating a layered effect as viewed through the serving glass.
