19990614: lattice constant from GULP, but NO thermal expansion
It looks like the lattice constant influences very heavily the quality of the MSD plots obtained from a given simulation (compare 19981124 and 19981126).
The lattice constant used in 19981126 (which was the same used in 19981113-19981117-19981119), which gives a good MSD plot, was taken from the paper of Brinkman [

Crystal Structures and Lattice Constants of Semiconductors and Other Materials
In some crystal structures, however, the edge lengths along all axes are equal (a=b=c), so only one lattice constant is used for its dimensional description, a.
Lattice constant values and knowledge of crystal structure are needed to calculate distances between neighboring atoms in a crystal, as well as in determining some of the crystal's important physical and electrical properties.
Note that, depending on the crystal structure, the distance between two neighboring atoms in a lattice may be less than the lattice constant.

Method for making semiconductor material - Patent 4284467
This lattice constant mismatch in combination with the composition gradient produced during growth of the epitaxial layer of selected composition causes dislocations at the interface between the substrate and the epitaxial layer.
The heavily shaded isolattice constant contour (5.685) is most closely matched to the lattice constant (5.654) of GaAs, a material commonly used as a substrate in the fabrication of electroluminescent semiconductor materials and devices.
This reduction in the lattice constant mismatch between the substrate and the layer epitaxially grown thereon reduces the probability that dislocations produced at the interface between the substrate and the epitaxial layer will migrate into the epitaxial layer and degrade its injection and luminous efficiency.

One particular configuration is designed to match lattice constant and polarity with the Si(100) surface and to possess a direct band gap of 1.59 µm, which is close to the canonical frequency used by the optoelectronics industry.
The lattice structure of the Type I subclass is similar to the layered, tetragonal ABC_2 structures studied previously, where A and B are group-III elements (instead of II and IV, as in this work) and C is a group-V element.
The difference in the percentage increase of the lattice constant (δa/a (T)) for the two materials is calculated to be less than 0.01% from 0K to 600K, and actually vanishes at 350K.

Actually, it can be shown that the reciprocal lattice (diffraction pattern) is related to a real crystal lattice through Fourier transform, exactly the same way a time domain signal is related to the frequency domain representation.
The relationship between the real and reciprocal lattice results from “structure factor calculation”, which in essence is the Fourier transform of the periodic real lattice.
