 Latvian Gambit
The Latvian Gambit is an aggressive chess opening in which Black gives up a pawn early on in the hope of gaining the initiative.
It was formerly known as the Greco Counter Gambit until the new name was made official by the FIDE Congress of 1937.
The new name was a tribute to the Latvian players, notably Karlis Betin, who analyzed it in the early part of the 20th century.

Gambit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gambit is a chess opening in which something, usually a pawn, but sometimes even a piece, is sacrificed in order to achieve an advantage.
For gambits that are less sound, the accepting player is more likely to try to hold onto his extra material.
A good example is the Danish Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 (3...d5 would be a way of refusing the gambit) 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2.

A gambit is a chess opening, where something is sacrificed in order to achieve a better strategic position.
The word gambit stems from the Italian 'gambetta' which means: setting a trap.
Queen's Gambit: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 xc4 - is the most played "gambit", but it is technically not a gambit, since white can always win his pawn back.

I remember both Latvian Gambit Magazines and Latvian-organized correspondence tournaments with the gambit when I was growing up).
Even with all the attention the gambit gets in that realm, and with all the tournaments, books, and magazine articles that have been devoted it, I would be amazed if there existed a Latvian Gambit devotee out there who didn't instantly scarf up a copy of Kosten's book.
Black desperately needs an improvement here." This is theoretical writing at its best: as a Latvian advocate, Kosten could easily claim that one of the many dubious deviations from the main line is unclear or "deserves analysis," but he avoids the temptation to do so.

The best is GrahamBurgess's 1995 book 'gambits', which does a good job of discussing motivations for gambits and types of compensation, but in my opinion the author uses the term 'gambit' too loosely and many of his examples are positional sacrifices and not what I would call gambits at all.
A few openings that are called 'gambits' are really non-gambits, the most obvious example being 1 d4 d5 2 c4 since even the Queen's Gambit Accepted (2...dxc4) is very rarely played with the intention of holding the pawn and White just regains his investment in the course of normal development.
Completely the opposite of the Benko, the gambiteer is seeking not a rational position with objective compensation but rather an extreme tactical melee in which human and computer opponents alike may lose their way.

The Calabrese Countergambit is very similar to the Latvian Countergambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5), also known as the Greco Counter Gambit, and can transpose to well-known territory if White responds 3.Nf3 (leading to lines too complex to analyze here at length, though this may well be among White's best options).
