Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga visited Iceland to take part in the conference "Women and Democracy at the Dawn of the New Millennium." At the conference the president praised US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and first lady Hillary Clinton for their efforts in promoting women's issues.
The Latvian Electoral Commission officially said the referendum petition against new provisions in the pensions law was successful and set the date of 13 November for the referendum to be held.
The organisation was the leader of all the protests during the "singing revolution" which led to the restoration of Latvian independence.

 CER | Hopes remain high for Latvian entry to NATO
The Latvian Socialist Party's congress unanimously re-elected Alfrēds Rubiks, the former leader of Communist Party in Soviet Latvia, as the party's chairman.
Another poll showed that 66.3 percent of Latvian residents are ready to defend their country in case of a military conflict and only 29.1 percent would stay out of it.
Participation of Latvian armed forces in international peacekeeping operations is approved of by 61.1 percent, with 28.8 percent disapproving.

The coalition government consisted of four parties the prime ministers New Era (27 mandates), Latvias First Party (9), the Union of Greens and Farmers (12) and Fatherland and Freedom/Latvian National Independence Movement (7).
While the Peoples Harmony Party announced its intentions of establishing itself as a West European style social democratic party and clearly announced its pro- European Union stance, more radical members of the union remained together until June, when the Latvian Socialist Party established its own faction with 5 deputies.
The crisis within the People’s Harmony Party continued, and at the end of the year, although the parliamentary faction still retained 9 members, some important non-parliamentary members left the party.

Rubiks, who was head of the Latvian Communist Party in 1991, served three years in jail for acting against the country's drive to regain independence, although he maintains that the orders for the OMON attack came from Moscow.
He is chairman of the Latvian Socialist Party, which has four members of parliament, although by law he cannot be an MP himself because of his time in jail.
If extradited, he would be the first Latvian Nazi-era war crimes suspect to be brought to trial since the country regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The least conspicuous of recent election gatherings in Ukraine was that of the Socialist Party on August 4.
Moroz on August 4 condemned the upcoming elections as an "adventurous" and "illegitimate" event, claiming that their main objectives are to remove the Socialists from parliament, "draw" Ukraine into NATO, and "cause a quarrel" between Ukraine and Russia.
