Latvian Way - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Latvian Way was founded in 1993, by a group of former activists of Latvian Popular Front and Latvian exiles which had returned to Latvia after it regaining independence.
Despite that, Latvian Way remained a powerful force in Latvian politics and was a part of every coalition government in Latvia from July 1993 to November 2002.
Latvian Way regained some ground in European Parliament Election in June 2004 with 6.5% of vote but it is still facing an uncertain future and the difficult task of regaining voter's trust.

 Latvian mythology
Latvians have had no national state or significant kingdom before the 1918 when the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed.
This was established to strengthen the Latvian identity through a Latvian religion supposedly coming from the glorious ancient past, intended as strictly national, but at the same time very similar to the neo-paganism known in the rest of the world.
Although the general view that Latvian gods had households the same way as the Latvian peasants did (the eternal problem out of this - what was the original: the heavenly or the earthly), it is hard to prove for sure.

Mortensen, Mari-Ann Herloff: The Latvian Thing. Narratives of Place and Identity among Local and Diasporic Latvians
I have chosen to use the term Western Latvians partly because most informants seemed to take no offense by it and partly in order to highlight the fact that the "Westernness" of the returnees was a significant issue in the relation between the two groups.
The narrative thus constructed the Latvianness of the present to be out of the hands of the homeland population, which provided the diasporic cultural practices with a sense of urgency or purpose and almost religious meaning.
Local Latvians' use of everyday life must be separated from the scientific distinction between public and private in socialist states, as the local narrative includes public and so-called "Soviet" practices and private or "informal" spheres of life, both of which informants claim to have invested with a "Latvian" content and meaning.

The use of oak, birch and other leaves, branches and flowers is very important to this celebration, as Latvian men, women and children bedeck themselves and their homes with wreaths and garlands to celebrate the arrival of this beloved deity of fertility and plenty.
