In July - August 1940 Latvian envoys who continued to be accredited to the USA and UK governments made official protests against Soviet occupation and annexation of their countries.
Members of Latvian diplomatic service in Western Countries continued to formulate and express the official opinion of the Republic of Latvia, and protected the interests of Latvia and their citizens abroad all time during 1940-1991.
As mentioned above, the specific character of the Latvian foreign service activities is a real affirmation of the unique situation that the Republic of Latvia continued its existence de jure, and most of the countries in the world did not consider its annexation to be lawful and just.

In the June 5-6, 1993 elections wherein over 90% of the electorate participated, eight of Latvia's 23 registered political parties passed the four percent threshold to enter parliament.
Local elections in 2001 represented a victory for the left-of-center parties in several municipalities, including Rīga. A leftist coalition in the Rīga City Council elected Gundars Bojārs, a Social Democrat, to the office of mayor.

Elections for 5th Saeima, the parliament of Latvia were held on June 5 and June 6, 1993.
This was the first parliamentary elections in Latvia after its independence was restored in 1991.
Latvijas Tautas Fronte (The Popular Front of Latvia), which was the ruling party before elections, received 2.6% of vote and did not win any seats in the parliament.

Indirect elections to the Senate, originally 47 seats, were held on 5 December 1995 and elections to the Mazhilis on 9 December, with run-off elections on 23 December 1995.

Attempts to form right-of-center and leftist governments failed; 7 weeks after the election, a broad but fractious coalition government of six of the nine parties was voted into office under Prime Minister Andris Skele, a widely popular, nonpartisan businessman.
In May 2000, a compromise candidate was found in the form of Andris Berzins, the Latvian Way mayor of Riga.
Between local elections in 2001 and Saeima elections in 2002, two new parties formed: the conservative New Era Party led by Einārs Repse; and Christian Democratic Latvia's First Party.

Latvians remain content to “think left but vote right,” and the country is still one of the few in the postcommunist world never to have had a left-wing government.
Latvian political parties used many innovative techniques to attract voters, including organizing beer festivals and hiring television celebrities to tour the country with politicians in order to attract an audience.This is not cheap.
This means that Latvian parties spent a total of 2.8 lats ($4.70) per voter on this campaign, compared to 1.7 ($2.80) in the US and 0.4 ($0.70) in the UK.8 The wealthiest party is the People’s Party, having spent over 1.2 million lats ($2 million) on the campaign, more than double its nearest rivals.

LNNK won the municipal election in Latvian capital, Riga in 1994 but its popularity quickly faded after that.
It lost half of its seats in the parliament in 1995 parliamentary election and eventually merged with Tevzemei un Brivibai (Fatherland and Freedom), another right-wing party with similar origins in the Latvian independence movement.

Repression of Latvian cultural and literary life was extreme during the 1960s and 1970s as a result of a purge of the Latvian Communist Party by Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev, which saw Latvian-born members replaced by those born in the USSR.
A Latvian Popular Front was established Oct 1988 to campaign for independence and in the same month the prewar flag was readopted and official status given to the Latvian language.
The Popular Front was decisively defeated in the June 1993 general election, and replaced by a coalition government centred around the Latvian Way, led by acting president Anatolijs Gorbunovs, and the Latvian Peasants' Union (LZS).

In the September 2002 parliamentary election, a last minute surge in support for the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) gave Dzurinda a mandate for a second term.
Following a summer 2003 parliamentary shake-up, the government lost its narrow parliamentary majority and now controls only 69 of the 150 seats; however, the coalition is relatively stable because of the parties' similar political philosophies and conflicts between opposition parties.
The election of a pro-Western, reformist government in late 1998 further boosted close ties between the countries.

Supporters point out that while in exile in the Latvian province of Mittau he awarded the Order to Tsars Paul I and Alexander I of Russia, Grand Duke Constantine of Russia, Count Rostopchine and General de Fersen.
In 1865, Comte Jules Marie d’Anselme de Puisaye, a Zouave in the papal armies; the Vicomte de Boisbaudry in 1875; Baron Yves de Constancin in 1896, who was later to become commander of the Hospitaller Nobles of St Lazarus, a Knight of the Order of Isabella the Catholic and of St Anne of Russia.
A man of letters, he founded the Association of Parliamentary Journalists and was the director of the Revue Internationale, dying in 1914.
