The latest parliamentary election was held on 5 October 2002 and saw a break with the previous election outcome, in that neither the Latvian Social Democratic Party nor the previous Prime Minister’s party, Latvian Way, won any seats.
The next parliamentary election is due to be held in October 2006.
The election winner was New Era, the party of former national bank director Einar Repse, which won on promises of modernising Latvian society.
