		Avec Laudenum was originally released on the Belgian label Sub Rosa in 2000.
		Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride recorded the album via mail and by the time it was released Wiltzie had moved from Austin, Texas to Brussels, which is reflected in the three part salute to Brussels' derelict World's Fair Grounds and the Atomium structure that sits there.
		Having drifted out of print years ago, Avec Laudenum is finally available again thanks to this kranky reissue.

		Knowing what came after, Avec Laudenum sounds a bit like a transitional record, capturing the duo at a point where they were reaching a plateau with their instrumental set-up, and just before they added the acoustic instruments that gave The Tired Sounds its unique feel.
		Avec Laudenum was composed through the mail as Wiltzie and McBride lived in different cities, and with the third part of "The Atomium", you can almost see a split screen of the two lonely men trotting out to their respective mailboxes.
		Avec Laudenum is not much of a departure, but it stands as perhaps Stars of the Lid's most focused and precise record.

		Laudenum aka Tinctura Thebaica was first popularized, or rather the dangers inherent in it's usage were first brought to public attention, in Thomas De Quincy's scandelous 'Confessions of an English Opium Eater' (1821), the 'Trainspotting' of it's day.
		Most people would have known opium in the form of laudenum, or paragoric (a very similar substance), a liquid preparation available from chemists which was administered orally.
		Tinctures of psychoactive drugs were pretty easy to come by; Queen Victoria herself was notably given tincture of cannibus to alleviate menstrual cramps.

		By the time I return home, the exposed skin on my face is cold, but I've returned to a more serene state and I owe it to Stars Of The Lid.
		Instead of relying on catchy melodies and finely-tuned programming, SOTL build up a world of sound by dissolving things down to their most pure forms.
		Although it was released a couple years ago on the Sub Rosa label in Belgium, this shorter release (especially compared to their massive 2CD release The Tired Sound Of) is very similar to that effort, but on a slightly smaller scale.
