Laughingthrush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Laughingthrushes are the genus Garrulax of the large Old World babbler family of passerine birds.
A few, like Streaked Laughingthrush occur in fairly open habitats, but most are jungle species, difficult to observe in the dense vegetation they prefer.
As with other babbler species, they frequently occur in groups of up to a dozen, and the rainforest species like Ashy-headed Laughingthrush often occur in the mixed feeding flocks typical of tropical Asian jungle.

Ashy-headed Laughingthrush - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Ashy-headed Laughingthrush   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Its habitat is rainforest, and it is seldom seen away from deep jungle or dense bamboo thickets in the wet zone.
Although its habitat is under threat, this laughingthrush occurs in all the forests of the wet zone, and is quite common at prime sites like Kitulgala and Sinharaja.
As with other babbler species, Ashy-headed Laughingthrushes frequently occur in groups of up to a dozen, and are also often found in the mixed feeding flocks typical of tropical Asian jungle.

This poorly known laughingthrush qualifies as Vulnerable because it is inferred to have a small, declining, severely fragmented population as a result of destruction of temperate and subalpine forest through logging and conversion to agriculture and pasture.
Distribution The White-speckled Laughingthrush is a poorly known Chinese endemic, known from the mountains of south-west Sichuan and north-west Yunnan.
Threats The White-speckled Laughingthrush is the (now) one threatened member of the suite of three bird species that are entirely restricted to the "Yunnan Mountains Endemic Bird Area", threats and conservation measures in which are profiled by Stattersfield et al.

MOSAIC project: the species - Laughingthrush   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Various species of laughingthrush are found throughout the Greater Annamites, and as the name suggests, are easily recognised by their distinctive call.
In 1998, a new species of laughingthrush - the golden-winged laughingthrush was discovered on the slopes of Ngoc Linh Mountain (the tallest mountain in the Annamites) in Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces.
Because of its distinct call, the laughingthrush is highly prized as a songbird and is frequently caught and kept captive in decorative cages.

 OBC | publications | Courtois's Laughingthrush | 2
It is noteworthy that Courtois' Laughingthrushes breed at so low an altitude, especially when compared with the the nominate form, which usually lives well above 1,000 m in India.
For example, of the four breeding sites of this taxon which have been located, none is larger than 10 ha in total size, which shows how phenomenally circumscribed the breeding territory of this relict subspecies has become.
And as to what we can learn from this pertinacious laughingthrush, perhaps most importantly it will afford us an excellent opportunity to study the long-term viability, genetic and otherwise, of such an extremely diminutive and tightly circumscribed population.

In 1874, Colonel Godwin-Austen described a new species of laughingthrush, Garrulax galbanus, based on skins he obtained in February 1873 in the Munipur valley, eastern Assam, India, (1) from which area the species is now mostly known by its English name, the Yellow-throated Laughingthrush.
It should be noted, however, that their elusiveness in the wild notwithstanding, there are several populations of Yellow-throated Laughingthrush in European collections, which apparently are self-sustaining, (11) and some bird keepers believe that the birds they have are of the subspecies simaoensis.
It is well established that most laughingthrushes nest in bushes, shrubs, or tall grasses rather than large trees, and breed in relatively isolated pairs rather than colonies, as indeed is reported for nominate galbanus.

This laughingthrush has a very small, declining, severely fragmented range as a result of forest degradation and fragmentation.
Threats The Collared Laughingthrush is one of two threatened members of the suite of four bird species that are entirely restricted to the "Da Lat Plateau Endemic Bird Area", threats and conservation measures in which are profiled by Stattersfield et al.
However, the Collared Laughingthrush is not as threatened by habitat loss as several other species in the Da Lat EBA because shifting cultivation is generally occurring below the altitudes favoured by this species (J. Eames in litt.

The [Taiwan] Hwamei is a medium-sized gray-brown laughingthrush, about 24 cm long.
The upperparts are olive grayish-brown; the buff crown and nape are heavily streaked with dark brown; these streaks continue onto the mantle.
Due to the potentially severe genetic consequence of hybridization and introgression, it is an increasingly urgent conservation issue to identify the ESUs within the Hwamei and re-evaluate its intraspecific systematic status.
