Launch window - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Launch window is a term used in aerospace to describe a time period in which a particular rocket must be launched.
If the rocket does not launch in the "window", it has to wait for the next one before it can be launched.
To go to another planet without using any kind of gravitational slingshot, if eccentricity of orbits is not a factor, launch windows are periodic according to the synodic period; for example, in the case of Mars the period is 2.135 years, i.e.

Typically, the biggest factor in determining the beginning and end of a launch window is a payload.
Windows can also be determined by conditions not only here at the launch site but also those halfway around the world.
Launching exactly halfway in the 10-minute time frame would require the least amount of propellant in space to rendezvous with the target.

Calculating the launch window for the ESA Mars Express mission involved timing the launch to allow the spacecraft and Mars to arrive at the same point in space at the same time.

It is their job to ensure that a launch window has the right combination of factors such as orbits, inclinations, planetary rotation and sunlight.
One of the group’s roles is to examine weather and climatology for launches and landings.
It is possible that the LCC guidelines indicate a “go” for launch while the abort landing flight rules say “no go,” and vice versa, but the decision to launch lies with the flight director, launch director and ultimately with Deputy Shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale, who chairs the Mission Management Team.

There has been some discussion on the constraints for launch windows of the Soviet L1 manned circumlunar spacecraft (note for example the articles by Grahn, and the discussion in the article of Vick and Pesavento cited in the bibliography).
Both Grahn and a declassified 1967 CIA analysis show that the L1 could not be launched for the first six months of each year from 1967-1972 due to launch window constraints related to the declination phase of the moon.

NASA's decision to launch Surveyor on 7 November 1996 was not an arbitrary choice, nor was it based on when management thought the spacecraft would be ready for flight.
The tricky part involved timing the launch to allow Surveyor and Mars to arrive at the same point in space at the same time.
Engineers on the flight team refer to the dates when Mars and Earth are aligned in the right position for launch as the "launch window" or "launch period." Surveyor's launch period opened on 6 November 1996 and closed on 25 November 1996.

The space agency has until mid-February to launch the piano-sized spacecraft, but a launch in January would allow the spacecraft to use Jupiter’s gravity to shave five years off the 3-billion-mile (4.8-billion-kilometer) trip.
The first launch attempt was called off Tuesday afternoon with less than three minutes left in the countdown, when winds at the launch pad in Cape Canaveral exceeded the space agency’s 38 mph (33-knot) flight restriction.
The launch preparations drew attention from opponents of nuclear power because the spacecraft is powered by 24 pounds (11 kilograms) of plutonium, whose natural radioactive decay will generate electricity for the probe’s instruments.
