		Laura, even though the cd didn't do as well as past albums, I raise my glass to you on this one.
		Laura's self titled album isn't my favorite, but it's beautiful in its own way, because it has a different feel to it, perhaps more mature.
		The first time I heard of the "Laura Branigan" CD was in a short article which said that Laura was in the studio and spies said that it was her hottest album yet!

		Laura listened to the late ‘50’s and ‘60’s girl groups, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, and the early Burt Bacharach-Hal David songs of Dionne Warwick, among many others.
		A working musician, Laura has spent much time during her twenties, thirties and forties on the road, singing in clubs and concert halls throughout America and abroad, including her return to Japan in 1994.
		Laura is currently writing and is working on a new studio recording and a third “live” recording - a small taste of which is previewed at the end of this anthology.

		As I listened to the album, after previously hearing the hit Spanish Eddie, one major problem arose: the majority of the songs just did not have the memorable hooks that past hits like Solitaire and Self Control had.
		Even though Laura Branigan has the kind of voice that can make anything sound good, even her great voice could not make some of these songs go beyond mediocre.

		Laura then covers the silly "Name Game" song from the 1960's as a fun diversion before going on to the mid-paced title track, underscored by programmed drums and a heavy bass-synth ensemble.
		Laura's cover of Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" is impressive, but audibly flawed: singing loud can't hide the fact that Laura is straining to hit those high notes.

		I’m not sure what the title refers to, but there are all those circles underneath the logo, so it must mean something, unless the publisher just thinks that teenaged girls are still way into Spirograph.
		This is apparently meant to play to the whims of a teenaged girl; any day she picks up the magazine — or the Bible — she apparently says to herself, Today I’m in a lower-case (or upper-case, or fl headline, or white headline, or, omigod, a QUIZ!) kinda mood.
		This should be the cover of the novelization, not the novel.

		I bring up this topic, because Laura was an established singer/musician/songwriter, who chose to do an album of cover tunes (including Gaye's "The Bells) for her second album.
		Other artist whose covers I like is Al Green - whose takes on Country records - 'I'm so lonesome I could cry' for example are something special.
		Its funny some people seem to think covers are a modern phenomenum but the sixties was littered with them - all over any album by many sixties artists (or even released as singles - two massive hits for Aretha and Dionne Warick with 'Say a Little Prayer' within a few months of each other).
