Interview with Laura Hillenbrand at SolPix
Laura Hillenbrand has been writing about history and Thoroughbred racing since 1988 and has been a contributing writer/editor for Equus magazine since 1989.
I did mostly veterinary medical pieces and investigative stories on issues in horse racing and the equine world, such as advances in equine veterinary medicine; the slaughter industry; the horse show industry's scandal in which horses were killed for insurance money; the governmental policies on control of the wild horse population.
Hillenbrand: Gary Ross, the author of the movies "Big," (for which he received an Oscar nomination) "Dave," and "Pleasantville," wrote the screenplay--the movie is in production now.

 CNN.com - Entertainment - Author escapes illness with stirring 'Seabiscuit' - May 4, 2001
Hillenbrand's earning raves for her retelling of Seabiscuit's improbable run in the 1930s, when he transformed from claimer horse with a "difficult" streak and the body of a cow pony to the celebrated champion of a country steeped in financial chaos and talk of a second world war.
Hillenbrand had earlier discovered writing as an escape from the misery of her illness.
Hillenbrand believes the story of the horse lies as much in those who surrounded him, and her attention to them paints a picture of early 20th century America and its golden age of horse racing.

Hillenbrand's debut book, "Seabiscuit," has lit up the nation ever since its release in 2001, but she has not been physically able to enjoy the accolades coming her way.
Overcoming conflict is a major part of the Seabiscuit story, and Hillenbrand says her goal was to write it in a way that would be appeal to both racing fans and to the general public.
Hillenbrand was aided in her research for the book, as well as for the newly published illustrated edition which cites Cravens, curator of collections Lori Fisher and other members of the museum in its introduction for their assistance.

LAURA HILLENBRAND'S "SEABISCUIT:" A CRITICAL APPRAISAL
Hillenbrand spent years tracking down dozens of stable hands, retired jockeys, former owners, racing writers of the 1930s and seemingly everyone who ever came in contact with Howard, Pollard and trainer "Silent Tom" Smith.
Hillenbrand never referred to Howard's rumored future book bet, despite the fact that earlier in the volume she told of other wagers that Howard and his friends reportedly made with Caliente bookmakers.
Will he split that with the actor aboard Kayak?) Strangely, while Hillenbrand's footnotes cite numerous newspaper stories about the race, both her original hardback and the recently issued paperback disregard articles in The Times that suggested Kayak was held back to assure a Seabiscuit victory.

The horrors Hillenbrand describes jockeys enduring are even more awful: starvation diets, purgatives, summertime jogging in rubber suits, even the last resort of swallowing a tapeworm's egg.
Hillenbrand also has a good sense of what to leave out, which may account for the book's near-perfect pacing and length.
Introducing her human characters, Hillenbrand doesn't, thank goodness, waste any space on the begats, those snoozer passages that you have to endure in biographies and histories when you just want to get to the story.

THE ROMANCE READER reviews: Seabiscuit - An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand
Hillenbrand doesn’t shirk in presenting the seamy side of racing in the 1930s, and her descriptions of the general poverty and brutal weight-control regimens of the jockeys may leave some readers feeling more than a bit queasy: rubber suits, foul purgatives, and in extreme cases, tapeworm eggs.

Hillenbrand’s description of the day a solid mountain of manure got swept up in a flood and demolished the Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana is nothing short of hilarious.

Bookreporter.com - SEABISCUIT: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand
In this way, Hillenbrand, a well-established thoroughbred-racing journalist, lets the story of this remarkable horse tell itself, needing only her evocative prose to guide it along.
Hillenbrand encapsulates her history and sporting lessons in the trappings of the kind of rags-to-riches story that is impossible not to relate to, the secret that makes this book a fascinating read for those new to thoroughbred racing or those (the author of this review included) pitifully ignorant of the seminal events of American history.
Ultimately though, the appeal of Seabiscuit, the appeal that transcends the borders of time, sport and species, is that he combined in his short stocky cow-pony frame, the kind of magical excellence we all strive and wish for with the endearingly every-man quality that we can all relate to.
