But while incorporating these unusual instruments into indie rock are a good way to attract attention, Ninetynine's two gals and two guys take turns stunning you with melodic and moody droners and ridiculous poppy bits that would've been just as potent without the mallets and keys.
Laura MacFarlane's voice carries several songs with a remarkable confidence, flooding the area with shimmering musical beauty.

 Exclaim! Canada's Music Authority
Laura MacFarlane says the universality of numbers - those numeric digits that are meaningful the world over - is why she named her foray into the international pop underground 99.
It may not be well-researched, but fixation with her numerology extends to album titles as well, as seen in recent release 767 and180°, which will be in record shops later this year.
It occurred to her she didn't have to include every song she wrote on her albums, which are distributed in North America on Winnipeg's Endearing label.

It is rare when an album made completely of b-sides and songs that probably weren’t good enough to fit on a full-length is good itself, and this just isn’t one of those occasions.
Ninetynine’s songs are ethereal, similar to those of the Capsules, with the exception that Laura MacFarlane - formerly of Sleater-Kinney) - possesses vocals that aren’t so nasal and annoying to listen to.
There are quality aspects of Ninetynine, such as MacFarlane's pretty voice which, when used to sing on more upbeat tracks like "4AM", "Monopoly", and "Uno" does good, not evil.

Over the years they've dished out a couple of quality full length releases, contributed tunes to countless compilations, toured the world on a shoestring, gone through half a dozen line-up changes and broken down some of those increasingly boring conventions that make pop music… well, uhh…increasingly boring.
Laura MacFarlane, proprietress of one of the world's greatest pop instincts, also possesses one of the most beautiful voices I've heard.
I don't know whether this can be attributed to the current line-up, Laura's ever increasing songwriting skills, or a combination of the two (probably)… but the songs here are downright awesome.

Starting off as the side project for former Sleater-Kinney drummer Laura MacFarlane, there’s no doubt that ninetynine have come a hell of a long way since then.
The big difference between the process and ninetynine’s other releases is that this record feels more like a band effort, with MacFarlane and Potts, having been a permanent member of the troupe since 1997, joined by Any Clarke and Iain McIntyre on a permanent basis.
With Potts drumming on tracks like “the conference” simply outstanding, of course the band lose nothing when MacFarlane contributes the same on “great escapes”, which is the closest that ninetynine get on the process to sounding like Sleater-Kinney, with Clarke on strident lead vocals.

Ninety Nine frontwoman Laura Macfarlane used to be in Sleater-Kinney, so she's seen first-hand the zillion kids who want their herky-jerky melodies and angry woman rock all broken at the joints.
They circle the guitars with a Shirellathon of drama, and burn bright against Macfarlane's sweet, fragile tenor.
Another superlative track, the band's cover of "Iron Man", goes far beyond the Cardigans' interesting update, as Macfarlane and drummer Cameron Potts make their heavy metal duet as snarling as the Fall, and as silly as Cub.
