  Botany 2006 - Abstract Search
CALYCANTHACEAE are sister to the remainder of the Laurales (magnoliids), which form two clades of three families each: Siparunaceae-Atherospermataceae-Gomortegaceae and Monimiaceae-Hernandiaceae-Lauraceae.
Floral phyllotaxis appears to be whorled, spiral, or irregular in the Siparunaceae-Atherospermataceae-Gomortegaceae clade and in Monimiaceae s.s..
As floral phyllotaxis seems to be so variable in Laurales, a comparative study of floral phyllotaxis of Calycanthaceae including six species of all four genera was undertaken.

  LAUREL,
All Laurales are woody trees, shrubs, or vines, and all produce aromatic oils in their tissues.
The Laurales are believed to resemble the earliest flowering plants in their woody nature, floral characteristics, and details of anatomy and pollen structure.
Laurales, however, are considered more advanced than the Magnoliales, another primitive group of woody flowering plants (see

In particular, the biogeographic concept of vicariance is used as an alternative hypothesis to the concept of dispersal when the same taxon has a disjunct distribution over several continents that were continuous landmasses in the geological past.
The order Laurales has been often implicated in the origin of angiosperms due to its early fossil record and the primitive characters that members of this order possess.
This type of transantarctic disjuction is common in Laurales (Berry 1935), and whether this distribution is due to vicariance or dispersal has been a commonly asked question.

RENNER, SUSANNE S.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Previous studies on the morphology, anatomy, and palynology of Laurales have failed to satisfactorily resolve family relationships.
Sequences from three regions of the plastid genome, the rbcL gene, the trnL-trnF intergenic spacer, and the rpl16 intron (comprising 2614 bp and 350 parsimony-informative characters), have been produced for 24 genera, with 5 of the 7 families represented by all their genera, as well as representatives of the related order Magnoliales.
Spacer and intron sequences of Amborellaceae and Chloranthaceae, which have sometimes been placed in Laurales, can not be aligned with the remaining lauralean and magnolialean sequences.

Laurales is the botanical name of an order of flowering plants.
It is possible that the ancient origin of this order is one of the reasons for its highly diverged morphology.

 Laurales
The Laurales are an order of flowering plants.
They are a basal group of dicots, closely related to the Magnoliales.
Under the older Cronquist system, the Laurales included a slightly different set of families:

The flowers of the Laurales are mainly perigynous or epigynous (save Amborellaceae and Trimeniaceae) as compared to generally hypogynous condition of the families in the Magnoliales.
Likewise, in Laurales there is typical only a single surviving ovule in each carpel.
The nodes of many members of Laurales are unilacunar rather than the tri- or multilacunar condition in Magnoliales, and for this reason, some have suggested the lauralian families are less advanced than the magnolian families.

In light of the overall framework of phylogenetic relationships in the Laurales, we show that x = 11 is an archaic base number in the order and is retained in the Calycanthaceae, which are sister to the remainder of the order.
Comparisons with other Laurales and Magnoliales (a sister group of Laurales) show that Gomortega has many embryological features in common with the other lauralean families.

It has anasulcate pollen like Idiospermum, which may be plesiomorphic for the order, with disulcate pollen being an apomorphy for the rest of Calycanthaceae and inaperturate pollen for the rest of Laurales.
Assuming the lateral hinges on the anthers of Virginianthus are equivalent to the rather differently oriented hinges found in most other taxa (but see also those of Sinocalycanthus - parallelism?), hinged anthers may be a synapomorphy for the order, and anthers with slits a synapomorphy for crown-group Calycanthaceae.

Such a family has been recognised by most taxonomists.
The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, of 1998), also recognizes this family, and assigns it to the order Laurales in the clade magnoliids.
As circumscribed by APG the family includes those plants that sometimes have been treated as forming the family Gyrocarpaceae.
