Sir Laurence Whistler, the writer, poet and glass engraver, who has died aged 88, singlehandedly revived the tradition of point engraving on glass goblets and bowls, an intricate technique popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Laurence was the youngest son of a builder and decorator, and his wife, who lived in Eltham, southeast London.
Laurence was unable to be with her at the time.

Rex Whistler (1905-1944), who was killed in Normandy during the last phases of the last world war, belonged to an era where artists found themselves installed in residence at various stately homes amongst the cultured elite of England between the wars.
Whistler himself came up and stayed for sometime at Plas Newydd finishing the painting, adding details to it, and organising the decoration of the rest of the room with its gilded cornice, painted coffering in the ceiling and trophies in grisaille over the chimneypieces.
Almost by way of a signature, Whistler adds in the arcade at the extreme left of the mural the figure of a young man sweeping up leaves, this is a self-portrait, the last one before his death in action only a few years later.

Like Poe, Whistler developed a reputation as a prankster, an after-hours cook, and a daring soul who was always willing to “run it” to Benny Havens’.
In 1852 a Whistler drawing decorated the dance cards for the academy ball, and he sketched the cover for sheet music “Song of a Graduate.” George Ruggles, USMA 1855, breveted four times in the Civil War and present at Appomattox, recalled Whistler’s “keen sense of the ridiculous.

Rex Whistler was a mature draughtsman at the age of twelve and barely in his creative prime when he was killed at the age of thirty nine.
Whistler's exquisite lightness of touch, delight in the odd world around him and teasing sense of fun are all brought out by his paintings.
Both Laurence Whistler and Victor Bowen were consulted, with the result that after touching up, the surface was cleaned and coated with a preservative, then the local Planning Department arranged for the fixing of a window frame over the picture, which not only preserves but enhances the truly life-like nature of his painting.

According to Laurence Whistler in his book The English Festivals: "...As Stow observed, the Elizabethan Londoner embellished his house and church with 'whatsoever the Season afforded to be green'.
Whistler calls it the 'Golden Bough under which all enemies reconciled.'.
This was called the Kissing Bough or the Kissing Bunch, according to Whistler: "...it hung from the ceiling in a luminous crown: a hemisphere of evergreens marked with a ring of candles above, and with a ring of bright red apples below, curiously hinting at fulfilment in the hour of promise."

Laurence Whistler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alan Charles Laurence Whistler (January 21, 1912-December 19, 2000) (always referred to as Laurence Whistler) was a British poet and artist, who devoted himself to glass engraving, on goblets and bowls blown to his own designs, and (increasingly, as he became more celebrated) on large-scale panels and windows in churches and private houses.
The finest of these was done as a memorial to his elder brother Rex Whistler.
His son Simon Whistler followed him as an engraver on glass.

 BC5 Laurence Binyon, Whistler
Binyon argues here that a contemporary ‘prejudice’ against ‘literary’ painting derives from Whistler’s (Ap) misunderstanding of Japanese art.
‘Whistler imagined that the art of Japan was an abstract art’, Binyon writes, but ‘as a matter of fact it is more saturated with literary allusion and deals more in moral ideas than our own’.
Japanese artists ‘had none of Whistler’s prejudices; art was a part of life to them, not something detached and unrelated.’ This is an understanding of Whistler’s relation with Japanese art echoed by Yeats, who would have drawn his understanding of the subject at least in part from Binyon (see BL10 and 25).
