Martin's occupation in Laurens District was primarily that, of a cotton and tobacco farmer as is evidenced by his estate papers, from which a great deal of family information has been derived.
While no battles were actually fought on Laurens County soil during the Civil War, the Millers apparently didn't fare any better than the Jordans, as the family's financial holdings were devastated by the conflict.

The Laurens County Farm Women helped raise money for the bookmobile, and the salaries of two staff members to operate it plus needed gas and oil were provided during the first two years of its operation by the WPA.
Residents of the county approved a bond issue in 1962, construction of an addition to the library began in May 1963, and the enlarged and renovated Laurens County Library opened in January 1964.
In March 1980, the Laurens County Library celebrated its fiftieth anniversary as a publicly-supported, county library with a month-long celebration culminating with an open house-birthday party which was attended by over 300 supporters of the library.

One afternoon in the summer of 2001, Carol and I were fulfilling some promises by collecting headstone info in the Mt. Gallagher area of Laurens County, SC.
Prior to the Revolutionary War western Laurens county was very sparsely inhabited, however, soon after the end of the war in 1783 and the establishment of Laurens County in 1785 this area began to fill up with families from Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The land transfer that he refers to in the last paragraph must be another piece of property as the 90 acres that contains this "Clardy" cemetery was purchased by James Clardy in 1801 and is not situated along the Saluda River.
