Lautari is a small group, a trio, in which each member takes responsibility for the final shape of the music.
Lautari is now comprised of me, Jacek Hałas, well known in the folk community as a pianist, and Michał Żak, who plays wooden flutes, carinet, and bombards, and who is also the leader of Bal Kuzest and Tredrez, groups performing Breton folk music.

The Lautari Trio, whose members describe themselves as an ethno-jazz chamber folk group, was formed in 2000 and is currently based in Poznan, Poland.
Lautari’s founder and leader, Maciej Filipczuk, has said: In forming this group and choosing this name, I wanted to acknowledge their history and to express my absorption of the musical traditions and culture of Romania, which I continue to discover, step by step, during my repeated journeys there.
Lautari has received numerous awards in Poland, where its recording Muzica Lautareasca Nova was recognized as one of the top folk recordings of the year - its main motifs coming from music of Poland’s borderland territories where many cultural influences merge.

The repertoire of this Gypsy music known as Lautari comprised pieces from a rustic environment, interpreted with great virtuosity and urbane arrangements for a very mixed audience in the town.
The grande dame of the "cantece de mahala", Romica Puceanu, was born in Bucharest in 1926 and at the tender age of 14 had already begun to sing in local cafés in the Floreasca and Herestrau quarters on the outskirts of Bucharest.
Above all however she was a soulful performer of the songs from the poor suburbs, which merged Turkish "cifte-telli" rhythms with Romanian melodies and lyrics.

These generations of gypsy musicians (lautari) are considered to be a sort of aristocracy among gypsies and the term rai designates someone whose authority or know-how is recognised by all.
