Lautoka is known as the Sugar City because of its cane belt areas.
Captain William Bligh spotted and roughly charted the coasts of Lautoka while making his epic voyage to Timor, in the wake of the Mutiny on the Bounty in which he and a few sailors loyal to him were thrown overboard and cast adrift on a life boat.
Incorporated as a town in 1929, Lautoka was proclaimed a city on 25 February 1977.

Cruising Permit: Also in Lautoka is the office of the Commissioner, where one may secure a cruising permit to visit the islands of the Mamanuca and Yasawa Groups of western Fiji.
The Lautoka office does not issue cruising permits for any of the islands south or east of the mainland (such as Kadavu, the Lau Group, or Taveuni); one must travel to Suva (either by boat or via 3-hour taxi or bus ride from Lautoka) to get a permit that covers all of Fiji.

However, we survived and my sea-sickness improved as we got nearer to Lautoka, where the waters are calmer due to the long coral reefs.

The third local centre to be established in Fiji was opened in Lautoka on December 7, 1996 by the First Secretary of the New Zealand Embassy, Isabel Calvert.
Like the other two smaller centres, Ba and Labasa, the Centre operates on a part-time basis from 10am to 2p.m., from Monday to Friday, and is staffed by two part-time counsellors and an administrative officer, who also serves as a part-time counsellor.
The Centre came into being through the tireless effort of a group of women who were concerned about the lack of services in Lautoka to support women and children who are victims of violence.
