		In the county, the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 21.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
		The median income for a household in the county is $29,132, and the median income for a family is $36,760.

		In 1842 the Republic of Texas Congress established a judicial county from portions of Fayette, Colorado, Jackson, Victoria, and Gonzales counties and named it La Baca County.
		In 1846 the area was renamed Lavaca County, and it became a regularly constituted county with 140 taxpayers.
		Petersburg and Hallettsville vied to be county seat, and after two hotly contested elections Hallettsville won the contest in 1852; only by force of arms, however, were the men of Hallettsville able to liberate the county records from Petersburg.
