Laventille is a suburb of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
One of the wards of the city, it is bordered by Saint Anns river (commonly called the Dry river) to the West, The Lady Young Road to the East, from the lowlands along the Eastern Main Road in the south, into the hills above Port of Spain to the North.
Laventille is characteristically a poor community, notably covered with squater settlements and slums called ghettoes, with a noticeable amount of Afro-Trinidadians and usually stereotyped as a community where poor and undesirable people and elements live.

In 1560, a Spanish garrison was posted near the foot of the Laventille Hills, which today form the city's eastern boundary.
The 1783 Cedula of Population, which encouraged the settlement of French Catholics in the island, led to a rapid increase in the town's population and its geographical extension westwards.
From the small cluster of buildings at the foot of the Laventille Hills, eleven streets were laid out west to the area bounded by the St. Ann's River, thus establishing the grid pattern which has survived in downtown Port of Spain to the present day.

But Laventille, a hilly, low-income suburb just east of commercial Port of Spain, Trinidad, justly prides itself in being the birthplace of one of the most popular musical instruments created during the 20th century–the steel drum or "pan," as it is more correctly called.
Laventille was settled in the mid-1800s by freed African slaves.
In the mid-1930s, these street bands began to use metal objects like garbage can lids, automobile parts, pots and pans, and biscuit tins because they were louder and stronger than bamboo, and they evolved into all-steel bands, or "steel bands" by the end of the 1930s.

Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille has copped the `Spirit of Emancipation' award among conventional steelbands participating in the recently concluded sixth annual Laventille Steelband Festival Street Parade.
Sound Specialists won favour with the panel of adjudicators to capture the award at the Festival, staged by the Laventille Steelband Festival Committee.

Then he led the Armed Forces Steel Orchestra which had an ongoing contract for performances at the U.S. Naval Bas eat Chaguaramas, but it was his leadership of the legendary Laventille Highlanders, for which he became best known.
